The Meat Tax

News

I don’t think it’ll go ahead, not anytime soon anyway. But if it does, I’m moving to another country!

Haven't seen UK news but is that like the silly TV license tax?

Meat in UK makes me wanna go vegan, it tastes nowhere near as good as it does in other countries. Oh, and the ham has a weird smell but that's apparently to preserve it.

like the idea behind the sugar tax, it is meant to help cover costs that the nhs estimates it is wasting on patients with meat-related illnesses. Just another way to squeeze money out of people with a pitiful excuse

hspexy but what they haven't realised is that poor people just won't buy meat and won't be eating enough "healthy" proteins to have a good diet. Which will then make an anaemia epidemic and they'll be losing money from prescribing so many iron tablets 🤣

Tasha042 lol I know, right? Always short sighted when it comes to these things. They just want to make money quick, but long term, there will be losses - to the industry as well, I imagine

hspexy exactly, farmer's will lose out and will need to up prices which will just make all produce more expensive I guess. Except for cheap junk food, that will still be affordable. So long term our diets will probably get worse. If they really wanted to improve the publics health then they should introduce nhs gyms and allotments 🤣

lol it certainly does sound like the authorities just want to keep us in our places - usually for their own financial gain. There definitely needs to be more done to promote healthier living and healthy lifestyles, so people are more active, but I guess that is easier said than done

Im veggie but i do think that meat tax is silly. It's processed food that causes the most damage in my opinion.

Indeed. Most modern day, manufactured food is processed, or have preservatives and additives that are bad for you

I hope it doesn't go ahead. It's the nitrites in meat that are unhealthy so surely the companies that use nitrites should pay fines not us the consumers. It's completely unfair in my opinion to impose higher taxes on food. The companies can afford to lose money where as there's so many people that are struggling to buy food.

I agree. Food shouldn’t be where they squeeze money out of people, although I’m sure they think it’s the easiest way to do it

I fear it will happen due to the surveys I've been doing lately asking me how much red meat I eat and would I be prepared to pay more for it if I could scan the package and see what cow it came from! The sugar tax started off as a suggestion and came into being. I only eat steak, gammon and beef nowadays if I'm either at my parent's house or being taken out for a meal because I can't afford to buy the above red meat. I think they will try and get us to eat meat substitutes instead (another words man made soy based product) as I've done a lot of surveys about this too.

yes I think for the past few years, they have introduced alternatives, such as eating bugs and all sorts - it does sound like they are gearing up towards something

indeed. They just want to impose more taxes, squeeze out more money. I guess no change from what they normally do? It certainly gets the population talking

hspexy The problem is that they tax us, but other countries will still do not care. So why would we pay all the taxes?????
