Millions of DAB Radio Listeners to Be Locked out of Stations like Classic FM

In the News

Millions of listeners with digital radios will soon no longer be able to tune in to popular stations including Classic FM.

Major channels are abandoning older Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radios in favour of new DAB+ technology – forcing listeners to buy a more modern radio

People were forced into switching to digital when the government announced ambitions to turn off the FM signal in 2015

This has now been delayed until at least 2030, but many digital radio models are now becoming obsolete as they can only pick up the DAB signal, and not the superior DAB+

Be careful, people are selling their old DAB radios on E Bay and second hand outlets to unsuspecting buyers at seemingly bargain prices that dont realise they will soon be obsolete

We have come a long way since Guglielmo Marconi sent the world's first radio message on On 13 May 1897

Carlton1512 I listen to music via Bluetooth because most of the time the radio stations suck. Still sad.

Ffs I can't get most radio stations on fm in my car. My dab is hit and miss. I'm going to have to Bluetooth it from phone to the car. I don't even know if I can get a new radio or tune it. I like the radio in the car just cos i get the news and hear different songs

I remember all the promises we were made how wonderful digital tv would be. Actually it’s worse in a lot of ways as you can’t do some of the things you used to. Not everything tunes in or you get terrible clicky pixelisation.

My phone has FM radio built in and its surprising how much I use that when going for walks. It uses far less power and no data allowance of course and picks up fm signals with great quality. I also upload mp3s to the phone's own storage and even videos for watching. It's amazing how much entertainment you can get out of such a tiny mobile nowadays.

I had a tv in the past that had a button on the remote to turn off the display so you could listen to music from radio stations through the TV without the screen taking any power. You don't seem to see that feature on modern TVs. Nowadays I just use my google speaker for radio at home. It's great I just ask it to change volume, station or even tell me the news or weather and it does all that effortlessly.

Yes the mobile is another great source of music entertainment B

I have the facility to use it with bluetooth to connect to my car radio but never do , just a memory stick via usb or memory card, i have slots for both

That button you had on the tv sounds awesome , i have never heard of it before

Thats one thing put me off listening to music through the tv , the amount of power i would use , unless i was watching music videos , its a shame as i have good sound through the tv, so good i dont use the soundbar anymore

Something like that would encourage me to buy that model just for that, especially with the energy crisis, , so much for technology, the tv manufacturers have missed out on that one

🙄

Found an old thread about this , it says some tvs do just as you say

Doesn’t seem very fair really since as you said they made everyone switch over to digital a little while ago. They should do a trade in scheme for obsolete DABs
