Also known as paper or Chinese lanterns, sky lanterns are a danger to wildlife. Although the release of them are banned on Council owned land and property in Wales, it's still legal to release paper lanterns in England.
An estimated 200,000 sky lanterns are sold and released each year in the UK. As the popularity of these items increase, so does the risk to wildlife. Sky lanterns can cause injury and suffering to animals and have a devastating impact on the environment.
There have been reports of animals becoming entangled in these lanterns and becoming injured trying to free themselves, which will cause extreme stress and suffering.
Not just about litter , these things cause hundreds of fires (some major ) every year !
Golfforall I know that! You are missing the point Sky litter is a danger to animals, there are some horrendous stories, like Owls being caught up in these lanterns and burning to death!!
JoTarpley I'm not missing the point , I obviously know that (and can read your post !) merely pointing out an additional reason those things should be banned .

There just aren't enough laws for people's stupidity nowadays, not that they follow them though! 
I know my next comment is not going to be popular but I think fireworks should be banned too.
apart from big displays maybe, don't start me on that one!! 
It's a huge problem. I hate when I see them because you never know who/what they are going to destroy. Shouldn't be allowed to be sold.
Sadly not Imnotcheap I would like to say 'we live in hope' but I'm not convinced! x

JoTarpley I agree with you 100% .... I think they should be banned along with fireworks ... I also think though, that if more publicity is given to the results then many people who 'just don't think' may be encouraged to refrain. ..... a bit like those plastic can ties for 4 cans of beer .... there was so much harm done to wildlife through those and I can't find anything saying how the proposed ban turned out. https://petition.parliament.uk/archived/petitions/262839 I remember 'banging on' to all the kids I knew in an effort to educate them and they did listen, and I hope they have continued to spread that message. Have just contacted our council via link so thanks.
