Do Any One Live on a Farm or Live on a Small Holding.

Other

Hi all just wonder what your thoughts are about living on a farm or a small holding. I am very lucky I do live on a farm and love it. It's my lambing time the end of the month. That's when the farm wakes up. My shops are 3 miles away the big city is a 100 miles away and the beach is only 5 miles away. I do not miss living in a city. You have more freedom. From October to about March you have the northern lights. Around early summer time getting some chickens . And I hoping to get some girls for Eddie the goose. This year going to have a go at growing things from bags and pots. See what I get. Could you live on a farm or small holding. Or would you miss city life. Image Image

Ah so you live in Orkney as well lol

Yeah its great isnt it the beach is only quarter of a mile away and beachcombing every morning for firewood and doing my usual scallop fishing on a Friday is great glad i retired when i was 40 might be skint but i am living the real life and not walking half a mile to catch a bus that is usually always late in the pouring rain at 7am every morning sitting with all the equally depressed faces in stuck traffic jams going into a job i hate and boss that cant do the job then doing it all again like a repeat until dead loop!

You have the ideal life dont diss it - who wants to live in crime infested, pollution killing you and your kids and all the diseases and things that come with living in close proximity with other human beings in overcrowded cities - animals are the best anyway I would rather have them as friends than so called humans!

Hello Nicola.

I wouldn't mind living on a farm, but I would absolutely love to live in the countryside in general. I am not at all a city person. 🍃 🌷

No, but will probably look into it since now we're no longer in the EU it feels like we're a bit safer (not entirely as stabbings are still very frequent in London and so on), plus with U.K. having its sovereignty back it could mean things will get back to normal (and the value increases).

We have lands overseas, but the fact that it's in a Europe-EU country concerns me as it's borderless (open borders) so there isn't much protection. They say it's one of the safest countries in the world, but that's just a huge crock of lies even moreso they permit anyone arriving from China to go unchecked freely into the country.

Firearms for self defense? They require that the person spend tons of money and acquire a bunch of licenses, so it just makes folks give up. Not to mention there has to be a very important reason or for your business (store). Even security guards can't have a gun or pepper spray.. legally.

Hi nicolajaynehend it sounds lovely where you are, peacefully idyllic. I was away last weekend staying in a converted barn, miles away from everything. Tbh I think if I did it longer I’d be bored, as I didn’t come across any animals, just a couple of bats. I like getting away from city life, but usually to the coast as I love the sea

Hi hspexy some of my friends get bored if they stay longer then 2 days. They miss the city and shops. They can't under stand why I love it hear. But I do I do not get bored. I can go to the beach has its only 5 mils away. The front of the house looks over the sea. So I have the best of both country and sea living. People pay a lot of money to go to these places for holidays. And i have my hobbies has well. I just love living hear. I would never go back to city living again.☺

nicolajaynehend sounds wonderful 😊 Maybe one day I can do it, preferably when I have a car, as I know it’ll take ages to get everywhere on foot (guessing public transport isn’t as abundant where you are)

hspexy no bus not abundant. About two a day if we are likey . I do drive which helps. Get my shopping delivered. Which helps a lot. And I make my own bread every few days. And all so do a lot baking and making home made meals and freeze. You have to work with what you got. Yes it can be hard going. But I still love it. Soon I've to get ready to start growing the veg and fruit. I do not go with out things. I have a movie night when I get the time. And I all so love sewing and making things for the home. ☺

I would to love to live on one. I grew up in the countryside and then it was all sold off and built on. Rumour has it that as I have signed the final contract one day soon I might even get to move into my new house which as a decent amount of land - well, as much as I could afford. I would be more than happy to be back in the countryside again. I hate cities. Oh and I do plan on getting some chickens. I have enough land for that.

Hi shellyann I do hope your dream comes true. It's a great life. In the Mornings i collect the eggs . Feed the sheep. Feed the goose. Have breakfast. End of this month I've got lambing. And I just love it. Seeing the ewe with her lamb its just magic. And some times you get to help with labing and the bond you get with the ewe is is just magic. She looks to you to save her lamb. No i would not like to go back and live in the city. I would miss my animals and i would feel bored and i would not feel safe. Hear i feel safe and very happy. Will you get some animals. You will have your own small holding. I do hope all go's well I have my fingers cross for you. 🦃

nicolajaynehend Sounds like a lovely life. I miss seeing cows being crossed over to the fields and being chased by angry geese... been chased by bulls as well. 😀 A long time ago now. I might get a duck or two. That's really all I can have. As my builder commented on the garden when I took him to go price up work that I have planned 'you've got room for a tennis court and still have a garden', so it's pretty decent, but one part of the garden is for growing fruit and veg and the other is for flowers, herbs, the fish pond and the chickens and maybe a couple of ducks. If I had more land, I'd love a pig or two. I remember seeing the sheep being sheared and used to help a friend's dad feed them. Also 2 of my friends had horses which was grazed on the common land on the original village green. All the farmers got offered big money to sell up, so they did. There's one public playing field, the common land on the green, one 'meadow' and one small piece of land owned by the council for the public to walk in left now.
