What Do People Think of Brecon Beacons' Name Swap?

Ask a Question

The switch - to Bannau Brycheiniog National Park - took effect on Monday, its 66th anniversary. The Welsh name means "the peaks of Brychan's kingdom" and is pronounced ban-aye bruch-ay-nee-og, with the ch making the same sound as in loch.

I am a non Welsh speaker, although I am Welsh, and I don't agree with the name change, due to the cost, I am sure there are better ways to spend the £.

Also how many maps, signage need to be changed.

It seems to be change for the sake of change.

I live right on the edge of the Brecon Beacons national park in South Wales, and really see no need for the name change, always been the Brecon Beacons to me and always will be . They changed the name of the second Severn crossing again near me ,off the top of my head can't tell you what it;s supposedly now called as to me and everyone I know locally still refer to it as the New Severn bridge.

Mango4 I agree, it will always be the Brecon Beacons to me too, as that's the name it's been all my life.

Lol as soon as I heard this I was like yup no one would refer to it it's new name. We've had roads change names and it's been years since it changed. No idea where it is and have to look it up everytime and go oh that road and think of it by its old name

I agree - seems like change for the sake of change. Just one more way money is wasted in society.

Not Welsh here either and I live a considerable distance away but I do like everyone else it seems think it's a stupid change and waste of money, I can't understand really why the need to do so either.

ch7leach The locals agree and were not even consulted, my bet is it was someone being overly sensitive that it wasn't in Welsh, whilst normal people are not precious about it.

I don’t see the need for a change, but perhaps I’m in the generation the younger lot are just waiting to die before they ‘improve’ or ‘save’ the world lol

There has to be better uses of money than this. I'm half cornish and certainly wouldn't want to be taxed more so there are more cornish signs in cornwall. People having to learn new names for places is difficult. If a sign wears out over time then the new sign can have the older name but it will still need the existing name on the sign because that is what the population know.

There are people that can't heat their home or feed themselves properly and we have to be rational about how we spend money. Personally I'd sack anyone who comes up with such projects I just don't think they are in the real world when the UK is in a horrific economic state and needs as a priority to return to a trading surplus and start paying back its huge debts.

Are they gonna change Blackburn, Manchester, Hackney (because it contains the word "hack"), Birmingham (has "ham"), **** Road, etc? 😑

LD censored the name of that road. It's what chickens are also called.

This is just.. stupid.

I went on a junior school school trip to the Brecon Beacons many, many years ago. I still got the postcard of it somewhere. I would like to know if the experts were drunk to come up this this ridiculous name.
