Do You Prefer Self-Scan or Manned Checkouts in a Supermarket?

Ask a Question

More and more stores are introducing self scan, checkouts and even scan as you go. Do you prefer these, or do you still like to use a manned check out?

Personally, I love being able to walk into my Sainsbury's, armed with just my iPhone, I have the Sainsbury's scanning app on there so can go round picking up everything I want, scanning it and packing it straight into my shopping bags. I then smugly walk past all the frustrated-looking people waiting in long queues for manned tills to get to the self-scan checkout where I simply scan the QR code to transfer my shop to their system and then pay by Apple Pay. It's so much simpler and quicker. I love it!

ch7leach ah yes the random checks forgot about that because I can’t remember the last time that happened. Pre pandemic I think.

Yeah it's been a while since I have had one, when it happens it's usually the 5 item check, only once have I had a full scan

I think self checkouts are excellent for people who aren't very good interacting with others. Social anxiety is a thing. I have it myself, so I know how beneficial they are for people like myself.

boepeep I really can see your point but the more you disconnect from people the worse it will become. I have always chatted to check out folk, without holding up the queue, and never had a rude one. Take tiny steps just saying hello with a smile could be beneficial to both parties.

I worry this world is becoming so disconnected from each other what with online shopping, gaming, social media, we are heading for a very lonely old age.

Lynibis I see your point to. I've had this for 12 years. I'm 24 now. So when self checkouts became a thing , there was a sigh of relief. Saying that, I'm all for manned checkouts. To each their own.

boepeep absolutely, you do what’s best for you. Only you know how it affects you.

I think someone put a very funny tik tok video online about how the person buying and using these machines has never had any training so if by ‘accident’ they do not scan an item but leave the shop it is not their fault.

I like having both as a option. Self service is great if your in a hurry and just buying a few items, but I wouldn't want to scan a large shop myself.

Self checkout as it's so much faster and convenient.

I prefer to use a checkout with a person. It keeps them in a job and it’s also useful for them to deal with problems there and then and know what the problem is. The self-scan machines always jump or time out or don’t accept the money. I find them more frustrating.

I much prefer a manned checkout. I always feel so flustered when using the self checkouts plus everytime I've used one I've had to get assistance from a staff member 😊

I use both. Today I used the self-service till and forgotten to take my £5 change. An Asda self-service staff came up to me and told me I left it in the "change till". The supermarkets have the latest technology and can spot attempt theft, etc.

I will unless the queues are crazy I will always use a manned checkout as if people do the self scan then eventually the company will consign the manned checkouts to the history books and I dread to think what the members of staff will do in terms will the companies get rid of them .

I use self scan tills or scan and bag as I go around the shop, nice and quick.

I prefer the manned tills especially for my big shops. Occasionally if I'm in a rush after work I'll use the self checkout but do try to use the manned till then.

Every self scan means one less manned checkout. Less staff less jobs. Our children and grandchildren will need to earn money at some time in their lives so where are the jobs going to be????? Having worked in a large supermarket I am totally against self scan checkouts

I don’t agree about less jobs. People have to design the self-scan machines. Build them. Install them. Maintain them. Clean them. Self scan frees up staff that used to work on checkouts to be available to do other things - take in deliveries, restock shelves, help customers in the store etc. Customer’s time is valuable and if we can save 10 minutes in the supermarket well, as they say, time is money.

The best thing about self scanning, is that you don’t have to deal with the ever increasing situation of staff wearing headsets. They have them in our local Morrisons and now in B&Q.. the staff wearing them are conversing with other staff members instead of focussing on the customer in front of them. This week I have experienced 2 situations where I was unnecessarily delayed or shouted at by a member of staff because I responded to the conversation they were having on headsets. They are the worse thing that stores have done. Give me a robot any day of the week!

Very true and some are both disabled and elderly, but again it is one of the days interaction with people.

Always prefer a human at the till. If I have to use a self scan a member of staff usually has to rescue me anyway

I haven't got a smart phone so can't use a scanning app. Now that there are very few checkouts open I feel I am being forced down the self service route. I pay enough for my groceries already so don't want to do the job of a till person unpaid. It was also nice to interact with the person serving you it seems such an uncustomer friendly experience now.

I refuse to use them. I want staff with the personal touch there. Not machines or robots. AI, used to save shops money and not jobs. That's the way I see it.

I like the scan as you go then you can pack at the same time and check the price as well .

If they do check your shopping they only do about 5 items

I prefer self scan with my sainsburys card I love the discounts . Been checked a couple of times when they scan so many items which is no big deal , I'm not doing anything wrong so all good even when I've set alarms off a few times when I've left a store I have all my receipts so no biggie saves time and since I'm not a people person it saves my anxiety levels

I like the Amazon supermarkets where there are no checkouts at all. You just take what you need off the shelves and walk out the door. The system charges your card for what you've had. Tesco is trialing a similar system in a couple of their stores too.

I prefer manned checkouts. It's nice to interact with a human. Think of all those staff members who will lose their jobs if supermarkets only have self scanners. I hate using them...

I prefer manned checkouts for 2 reasons....

1, I am physically disabled and use a tri-walker, which builds up large amounts static electricity in myself for some odd reason.... This ALWAYS causes the self scan machines to go wrong and I am constantly needing an assistant.

2, I personally like dealing with a person at manned checkouts, and I would hate to have to use a store with all self scan ones. Too many places are pushing self scan on us already. Keep the human interaction and people's jobs....xx

I prefer a cashier. Have you ever thought about how many people's grubby hands have been all over the self-scan tills?! Have you ever seen anyone wipe/clean them?

Manual, because if everyone chooses self checkout, there wont be any more tills or jobs. Self checkout is better for just a few things to avoid the queue. I struggle with checkout because of illness. Its better to have someone to help with packing too.

I personally refuse to use self service tills. I am very capable to use them but it is taking away other peoples jobs. I don’t work there and I don’t get paid to scan my products. This also means they are saving on wages and making more profit on everyones shopping. I also like the personal touch and conversation from a human being. People need to think of others and although people may find it quicker to use the self scan it could affect the next generations for jobs including your own family or even yourself!

I prefer self scanned or the handset as then you can see the prices at each stage. too many times the checkout assistant has overcharged and then I have to query with customer service.

Absolute nightmare. Fed up of having to wait for someone to come and ok your bags, your alcohol and the tags on your clothes. Scan and go is great but the self scanners are a nightmare. Asda leaves a lot to be desired.Worst shop.

I prefer the self scan checkouts or even better the handheld devices so I don't have to wait until the end to pack! Really happy to see my local Aldi now has self checkouts 🙂

However it's always nice to have one or two members of staff around to help if needed!

I went to a new discount store where there were two cashiers (one active) and three self-checkout machines guess which one people used? The cashiers.

I did use the self-checkout to see the price of an item.

Self-checkout machines are just unnatural.
