Should Prequels Be More Similar?

Ask a Question

I've just watched yet another prequel which apart from names has nothing in common with the original. Should a film be allowed to say its a prequel if they very different

Leannexxx that's what I think but to name 2 wonka and buzz lightyear had nothing to do with the others just cashing in on names

Leannexxx hi Leanne, a prequel wouldn't carry on the story, that is a sequel, a prequel tells the story of the characters before when they were young or leading up to original story.

I really want to see Willy Wonka as it stars my current favourite actor, Timothee Chalamet, he was magnificent in The King, story of Henry V and the Battle of Agincourt.

I don't think you should be able to call it a prequel - there needs to be a clear link to the original 🙄

A prequel is a 'back story' so as long as the latter follows on in an appropriated style should be ok but needs be some obvious relationship between the two even if separated by years.

MelissaLee1 agreed but unfortunately both can be too different

You mention 2 examples neither of which have I seen. Not interested in Buzz and haven't heard anything about it. However, I have read about Willy Wonka and do want to see it. I understand that it is how, as a young man, he started his chocolate empire, there is even an oompa loompa so I would certainly say it is a prequel.

To be honest it is just a word and I can't say I have noticed this prequel problem. I would be very interested to know if anyone knows of any genuine misnomers. I have enjoyed House of Dragons the prequel to Game of Thrones.

Lynibis yes there was an umpa lumpa but that's probably the only part that links it with others

Imnotcheap I really fancy seeing it, is that really the only link? Does it not make it clear it is Willy Wonka in his younger days?

I suppose the Hobbit book/films would be quite challenging if you came in in the middle unlike Taken and Bourne Legacy which all seem oh so samey er those and Aliens .I'll stick to Shrek. You know exactly where you are with him.

It should as it is part of the movie it's connected to.

The Thing has a prequel and it shows what'll occur next time.

Prequel - 2011

Original - 1982

The original movie is a masterpiece and I'm sure I'll rewatch it again someday later.
