Some people say that the Royal Family are lazy and just live off the tax payers, but Philip did over 20,000 solo public engagements.

He was a character, singled minded and said what he thought.

Very sad news. After being ill last month he looked very frail, and I thought it might not be long but such a shame he didn't make it to his next birthday.

@angelic LeannexxxHe actually got his wish by not reaching his 100th birthday - so although very sad for most of us, some might find some comfort in knowing that his wish was granted.

"In an interview with The Telegraph back in 2000, the duke said he "couldn't imagine anything worse" than turning 100". https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-98-birthday-could-not-imagine-reaching-100-2019-6

I have seen other things more recent that shows he hadn't changed his mind as he approached 100.

He seemed a lovely man but it just took over every TV channel which wasn't necessary. It's a shame that Harry and Megan said what they said

Agreed. Blanket coverage on BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and suspension of BBC4. With more coverage across the BBC Radio stations and elsewhere was going over the top. It just ends up being a lot of waffle and repetition. You can still be respectful without having to resort to this type of saturation coverage. I'd be interested in seeing a breakdown of the day's viewing figures for these channels/ stations. I doubt many people watched or listened to the same reports for hours.

Pppathome Agreed. No need to show it all day it was like we are forced to mourn his death.

ACR Although I shed a few tears when I heard the news, I too am now wishing they would stop the constant news coverage. It is not that I mean any disrespect but how many times can you hear the same tributes, memories, anecdotes etc without feeling somehow that everything else has paused while we are force fed this particular news item.

But this has ever been the media way of things. Whenever there is a tragedy it is overplayed, even though we live in an age where once heard we are more than capable of finding out more if we wish, they insist on overdoing it.

There should be a rota system whereby all the channels can report the immediate news but then just one channel can go into greater detail for those who want to watch for hours on end.

Having said all that my sincere thoughts are with the Queen and her family at this time, it seems like an end of an era with the passing of Prince Philip.

Lynibis a rota system would've been preferable as each channel could have offered a different perspective. Rather than endless repetition. The BBC should have limited coverage to just BBC1 (or 2) and Radio 4. It doesn't make a lot of sense to play the same thing across all of their channels/stations. Plus, the BBC could have made yesterday's scheduled TV shows available on the Red Button and iPlayer instead. TV licence holders have essentially lost a day of programming that they paid for.

Just to put the cat among the pigeons, do you think that the Meghan situation hastened his demise? I think he might have made 100 had the situation been different....

I knew he hadn't been well but was still shocked to hear the news. I liked Prince Philip. I felt very sorry for the Queen as she had lost her husband of 74 years and of course the rest of the family had lost a father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed.

I must admit watching the TV, I had forgotten how much the UK need to thank him for:

Playing fields, I do remember councils selling these off in the 70s didn't realised he had helped raise £ to save them.

Duke of Edinburgh awards now that have help give confidence.

WWF and a lot more

It is clear he has been a great support to HM the Queen.

I watched the funeral today and had several moments when I welled up. There are not many people who have lived longer than him so he has been around for all of our lives. He had a traumatic childhood and was a rarity in royal circles having spent a large part of his younger years getting his hands dirty, being treated relatively normally (Gordonstoun and RN) and could therefore relate a lot easier than the Queen. Through no fault of her own she has never really done anything normal, cooking, cleaning, shopping etc so it is even more astounding that they had 73 mainly happy years together. Rest in Peace Philip, we won't forget you in a hurry.

I would genuinely say "RIP," but...

I despise him for that.

If we were all despised for things we have said it would be a very sad world. The good he did far outweighs any unwise comments he made and I personally agree with the sentiment if not the deadly virus bit. We are killing the earth by overpopulating it and it is time something was done. Rich and poor alike leave huge carbon footprints, rich more so as they have far more possessions, but also free access to contraception.

But I don't expect you to understand as you always take the rebellious stance and make what you think are majority held views, when in fact they are in a minority. But then I don't despise you for your oftimes silly ideas about things, we all do it occasionally.

Despise him if you will but for that comment alone is silly. I really don't think he MEANT it, he was just emphasising the problem the human race are to the planet & animal extinctions(which we are responsible for something like 80+%).

Wow! Can't believe you wrote that! You clearly didn't get his dry wit or the fact that he was instrumental in improving life for everyday people - he just didn't shout about it. I've just about had it with all the hate going around in the last few weeks so my tolerance is at an all time low.

It is quite sad he didn't reach his 100th birthday. Imagine him getting a letter from the queen! But i think he didn't want to be 100
