Tuna pasta bake, it's a favourite with nearly everyone I know. Failing that I've always got chips in freezer and cheese and eggs so cheese omelette and chips goes down well.

JLouM The reason I was asking. I was visiting my dad the other day, who lives in a very expensive house and has no money worries. He offered me a cheese and marmite sandwich because he had nothing else to offer for lunch. My step mum was out at the time but I checked the cupboards and fridge for food and they were pretty empty. Between the 3 of us (my husband, being the third) we finished the cheese. Just surprised he had nothing else to offer and he knew we were visiting.

eyeballkerry Does he have a routine? Everyone can run out of food before their next shopping day. Especially if turned up just on spec without notice. In my family we always offer to contribute something to pad out what they have to offer.

JLouM He had been out shopping before we arrived as he knew we were coming. We live over an hour away. He did some tiger bread which was very nice but hadn’t thought about the filling.

eyeballkerry maybe next time you visit you should bake a cake or buy one. I’m sure it would gratefully received.

Pjran We made the journey to visit and if it was the other way round I would not expect people to bring their own food. My main question was can you provide a quick meal if you had unexpected guests. I always have the basics in for such an eventuality.

eyeballkerry if elderly then I wouldn’t expect them to provide a meal. When visiting my Nan I would offer to go to the fish and chip shop.

If I was aware someone was visiting we would ensure that we have made some provision, whether it's tea and cakes maybe a few sandwiches or a more substantial meal depending on who is coming and how long we anticipate them to stay .

We always have plenty of food in our cupboards anyway and could rustle up something as we mainly eat at home , but I have a work colleague who lives with his wife and as they eat out most evenings or buy takeaways they rarely do a proper shop.

At the moment I have porridge, a few tins of soup and in the freezer mainly frozen vegetables and some frozen home made soups. I definitely wouldn't be the best of hosts I guess with those options. Pretty rubbish actually. I do have plenty of drink options though (all non-alcoholic).
