Quarter of All UK Cash Machines Now Charge Fees

In the News

I guess the banks are trying to make as much money as possible - it’s their forte after all

What do you think of this?

If I need to draw cash then I always get it when I am in a supermarket at the till. I resent paying charges at a cash point that could be rigged. Scammers have gotten quite sneaky.

Same here. There was one time I was in Bali when an elderly couple staying at the same hotel had their card swallowed up by an ATM and returned to ask if they could borrow the phone to call internationally to the bank to cancel the cards. Apparently there are a lot of fake ATMs in Bali so the quicker they could cancel their cards, the better

Personally think its wrong to charge you for your own money your working hard to earn. I usually ask for cashback at the tills or go to my local bank and withdraw.

Although I am against fee paying cash withdrawals , I understand why some places charge. the machines are usually owned by third party companies rather than the banks , and there must be a cost involved in purchasing, siting, maintaining , and actually stocking the machine with money , someone has to pay for all that hence the fee, don't believe any of the banks actually charge, but they are not always as convenient .

I would never pay to withdraw my own money. They have such a cheek! I would rather go without or go for a stroll to find another one

Why isn't the title of this topic: "Three Quarters of All UK Cash Machines Don't Charge Fees"?

Let's be a little more positive!

Because that would imply the banks have increased the number of free cash machines - when we all know that they’ve actually been removing them. No point dressing something up as something it’s not

hspexy It's got to be remembered though that the use of ATMs is declining, I have personally only used one once this century, when I needed actual cash in a hurry, I ensured it was one of the 75%, or more, that didn't charge though.

With cash back, from debit cards (the same cards used at ATMs) at most retailers, ATMs, are becoming almost redundant.

I did read that the banks are planning to pay retailers to give "cash back" without any purchase being necessary.

I don't use ATM's very much but if I see it has a fee then it might as well not exist because I will never use it.

I will not use ATMS that charge fees. I will go inside my bank and redraw cash rather than pay.

This is ridiculous having to pay to withdraw your own money. Another money making scheme.

What a rip off. The main ones who will fall to this are the elderly as they can't travel too far to get their money from an ATM without fee. Or from their bank.
