Heres a Recipe for Hand Sanitiser

Well done, hope you weren't overcharged for the privilege. I suppose one advantage of living alone is that I can get in the front door, thoroughly wash my hands immediately (I have dettol and tea tree soap) and know I am the only person who may contaminate it. But of course, we are still all at risk from others touching things we touch, and vice versa, sneezes, coughs and touching each other. I have to help children in and out of vehicles, strap them in and I doubt that many of the baby cradle seats have had the handle washed for ages, some look positively filthy. I have started carrying dettol wipes to clean them.

Lynibis 89p each if you can get hold of any the Dettol spray in a tin like a air freshener is fab to use on the car seats handles etc shops are sort of getting back to normal if they stick to 2 items per customer we be fine but the checkout lady was saying one family brough all their kids to get 2 each whice that they stopping too

I have just watched Dr Hilary on the Lorraine show and he had some he had made using rubbing alcohol (again not for drinking lol), your favourite moisturiser and a couple of drops of essential oil. Although he did not say it I noticed the oil was tea tree which I have a lot of faith in.

I guess rubbing alcohol and high alcohol content vodka will now start to run out!

I hope you don't mind but I found another recipe (It has running alcohol too) I did laugh with the woman about drinking it lol That's so true that vodka with over 60% alcohol will start to run out.

I have just done my next online shop and cannot find any vodka over 40% and apparently it has to be 60% plus.

I was also surprised to learn on gmb this morning that only 7 to 8% of people grocery shop online, surprising when you consider how much they shop for other things.

I would sooner grocery shop online than wander around a supermarket with hundreds of people. As I said in another post it would be safer (for deliverer and buyer) if the shopping was dropped at doors in carrier bags which could be reinstated during this crisis.

Lynibis that's great to hear, thank you. I will keep an eye out for any other recipes or info. Hopefully stocks of antibac gel etc will be replenished. I was talking to the woman about vodka she said most aren't over 60% alcohol but Polish spirit is (she told me the price so I wouldn't get ripped off , I've forgotten what price she said lol) I think with online shopping it's frustrating that you can receive an email or be told by the delivery staff that items are unavailable. It is preferable though especially at this time. That would be such a great idea about having bags dropped off. I really hope that will be reinstated. Thanks for this thread

Absolutely, but something portable is good if you are out and about. I am one of the few people who could hole up for 3 months but morally, I don't feel able to do so. But is it moral to mix and spread and then be a burden to others if you get it.

Lynibis I agree. Hand sanitiser is a good invention and when you are out and about and have no access to soap and warm water, it does really come in handy.

Whilst hand gels are useful when you can't access soap and warm water, I am at the same time beginning to wonder how people managed before they were invented.

Hi Dennab I feel you are being rather rude to the op with regards to telling them to research and copy and pasting etc. It clearly says to use:

DO use this recipe if you cannot buy hand sanitiser and are traveling etc and do not have access to hand washing facilities. It was shared for this reason.

I am absolutely astounded by your rudeness on your (supposedly) first day with LD.

I will endeavour not to reply in same vein but did you actually read any of the comments?

The recipe in the opening topic made it clear the alcohol had to be 60% or over.

The same recipe was demonstrated by Dr Hilary on the Lorraine show with the added advice that rubbing alcohol can be used instead of vodka.

None of the ingredients are harmful or dangerous (what do you think hand sanitisers are made from?) and this is a good standby when you cannot get to a sink for traditional washing of hands. Ordinary soap and water will not kill as many bugs as sanitiser.

I feel personally offended that you would imply that I have endangered people and would like to assure other members that I would never recommend anything that might put others at risk.

Lynibis, just search Google and why are you offended by a little criticism? There are multiple articles by trusted media outlets advising against it so please learn to accept that others may have a different opinion to you. I would have responded in the same way regardless of who wrote it so please calm down. Dennab It good that it's not enjoyable to you to belittle. Your comment states that it was dangerous etc with regards to the alcohol level. Your comment was unnecessary with regards to people having relevant medical qualifications. We have plenty of training in infection control etc. I will not be commenting further.

Dani1 Yes. It can damage your skin and pure alcohol can be a dangerous product to have lying around. I'm assuming the "we" comment means you know each other in real life so the defensiveness makes sense. I'll leave it here now as well because it's up to people reading this on which advice they take. By the way Lynibis, you may wish to be a little more consistent about your views if you are going to reply to criticism in future. You have agreed with someone above that you cannot beat soap and water but then told me sanitiser is better.

I stand by my original reply to your first comment Dennab. Pure alcohol is no more dangerous than bleach and a myriad other cleaning products found in the average home. Soap and water and sanitizer both have their place but I have clearly stated I cannot carry soap and water around with me in a car to wash my hands every time I drop off or pick up a child.

If a doctor recommends making your own then the advice was not irresponsible in any way. No one even suggested putting pure alcohol on your skin but if it happened accidentally it would be far safer than bleach, weed killer etc.

Finally I do not know anyone on LD personally but this is a friendly platform where chat friendships flourish and rarely become disagreeable. You would have seen this if your very first comment had been introductory rather than critical.

PS I was offended by a 'little criticism' because it was not warranted and accused me of endangering folk. I can certainly take criticism of my opinion (and will often agree with the other viewpoint) but this was a factual post.

DennabWe'll agree to disagree, it can be used effectively with other other products and not cause skin damage. I agree it would need to be stored safely. I don't know anybody on here. I'm fairly new to chat. Anyway I'm off to drink some vodka.

Lynibis I recommend deep cleaning your car's door handles, steering wheel, seat belts and gear stick on a daily basis and avoiding the handling of money, petrol pumps and basically anything anybody else has touched because without doing that, a bit of hand gel now and again won't be very effective. I can already see that this is like walking into a coffee morning uninvited but don't go online to make friends. I find real life is better for that but each to their own. It's hard replying from a bath full of vodka so I must dash now...

Dennab Your advice is good and I am doing those things as much as possible. I have a slight advantage in that I live alone so don't have to worry about others touching things in my home or car. I have asked my family/friends to stay away until we know which way this is going. I carry dettol wipes in the car but my driver might bring something in, who knows. (We use a works car so mine doesn't get used much).

After this little hiccup, I truly hope your time with LD is pleasant and profitable. I just wish drinking the vodka could afford a degree of protection from the virus!

I bar of soap is a lot cheaper than alcohol. I’ll use the soap and drink the booze.

Lol I think I will self medicate with the vodka if I get ill Pjran. I am not sure if soap has the same killing power but I have a bar of dettol soap and a double pack of tea tree soap.

Lynibis Soap is still more effective. I know this is going to be an argument forever more but a gel doesn't clean anything. Soap does. A pair of well-washed hands are not going to gain any benefit from being soaked in an alcohol based product other than potentially drying out skin. Look at surgeons before they go to theatre. They scrub their hands with medicated soap. The only place for that gel is a situation where you want to eat or touch your (or somebody else's) face and cannot wash your hands for some reason. Even then, I think a lot of it is in vain, just like those masks people are buying.

No argument here Dennab. I wasn't sure about the properties of soap v sanitiser and my initial thing was all about portability because of my job. I certainly wouldn't use sanitiser indoors.

I seem to remember reading years ago that only minutes after washing hands, whatever method, they are once again covered in bacteria. But of course that isn't an excuse to not wash them but to hopefully wash and keep the bacteria to a minimum.

Two different products. One removes everything including germs and anything else that is bad. The other just kills organisms but doesn't clean.

I expect the rubbing alcohol is cheaper and with all the ingredients you could probably make enough hand size doses to make it cost effective.
