Would You Recommend a Caravan or Motor Home?

Ask a Question

This seems the only way to have a holiday and be safe after lockdown. Does anyone have any recommendations on either. I appreciate the cost is going to be different but what do you personally recommend?

My son has had both and he came down on the side of caravans. His reasoning: If, when you reach your destination, you want to go out and about, it is far easier to unhitch your car and travel the surrounding areas without the worry of parking a large vehicle and manoeuvring around small picturesque places.

We used to have a sited caravan. It was good in the respect we could have a peak season holiday, but it was at the same site every single time. We did like the freedom we had when we got there with travelling to the local villages/towns, so I would suggest get a tow along caravan

Motor homes are expensive and you need a large to store it. Plus it can be a nightmare to park going to the supermarket .

Definitely don't buy either until you have rented (or borrowed) and tested out both and are absolutely sure you enjoy the experience, and want to repeat it over and over. A van and a tent would be another option.

Have used both but never personally owned. We did used to have a trailer tent when the children was younger but tent camping is not for me anymore.

Caravan you have to tow it (need a big car) ,need room to store it (OK if you have a big drive ) . Motorhomes are big and expensive and a lot of depreciation and insurance if it spends most of the year sitting on your drive .

Maybe a camper van ? OK a bit basic but they are quite well equipped these days particularly with an enclosed awning .

I've thought seriously about both in the past , even tried camping (with all the mod cons ) but too many drawbacks .

In the end if we don't go abroad (unlikely this year ) we hire a static on a big site with plenty of amenities (most of which won't be there this year ) . A lot cheaper in the long run .

The sites will open as the lockdown eases but there will be no entertainment , swimming pools etc so should be cheaper .

If you want out of the way, Forest Lodges could be an option but I would expect them to be even more expensive this year .

I wouldn't fancy lugging a caravan around but lots do and love it. Bear in mind you are looking at over 瞿1000 just for the towbar and electrics for your car and site fees when you get to your destination - you can't just park up in a layby or field .

No recommendations as such , just a few things to consider . As previously stated hire one for a week before taking the leap . Caravans and motorhomes though expensive to buy are hard to sell for a decent price, in particular sited statics .

I lived in a caravan for months when I worked in the holiday camps.

The main thing was -

Don't come knocking when the caravan is rocking 不不不
