Would You like Salt and Vinegar on Your Shark and Chips ?

Ask a Question

Yes that's right, another cost saving excercise , this time by some chip shop 'sharks'

They have been selling shark instead of cod or haddock

One study found 90 percent of the takeaways it sampled were selling a shark species

So shark is sold as an unlabelled ‘mystery meat’ all over the world, including in the UK

It might be labelled as 'rock salmon' for example

The sale of shark is allowed in some cases ,some are protected , but it's the deceit that gets me

A bit ironic really, we are afraid of a sharks bite , but we might be biting into a shark

Is this to your taste or would you not 'enjaws' eating this

Many years ago, our local chippie started passing off other fish as cod - so the moment we could taste it wasn’t cod, we stopped going (no real issue eating other fish, but don’t like being lied to)

hspexy What did it taste like? Did you notice it was shark or something else?

hky it was tougher, way tougher than cod. Other locals also noticed the difference and just went elsewhere - we suspected it was dogfish, as there were reports of cod fish shortages at the time (again, I’d eat alternatives if I were given the option, but not happy about not being told of the substitution beforehand)

There isn’t an issue as long as it’s clear what you’re buying. However labelling stuff as cod and then charging a premium for it is a joke.

I don't eat fish and chips on any form but I don't think it would be so bad if they said it was shark that's the issue there was a chippy near me that was using different fish saying it was cod it was closed within months

I used to work in a quite posh hotel which was known for its seafood. We used to sell a lot of rock salmon in the restaurant. I don't think we'd have sold so much if it was down on the menu as dogfish

I thought that a lot of chip shops used pollock instead of cod.

I never ask for 'fish & chips' but always ask for 'cod and chips' so if they give me anything else it could go to trading standards!

tumblespots I should imagine getting a chippy takeaway after a few drinks at night you might not even know what they were serving you T, but yes during the day if you ask for cod and they give you something else they do risk a fine

I always thought shark was an expensive fish to buy - I wouldn’t eat it willingly. But normal fish and chips - or even just proper chippy chips have to have salt and vinegar on!
