Separate Checkouts for People to Chat?

Ask a Question

Should we have separate tills for people who want to have a chat?

There's nothing worse than being in a rush and getting stuck behind someone who is having a good old chin wag with the person at the till. So should they have a separate one that people can go to have a chat while they checkout?

Yeah it's really annoying when they get into life story conversations, or you get one that's really slow

martinlufc5637 Some people can't help being slow, unfortunately.

Probably a separate checkout for miserable people who don't like to chat with anyone. Use the self service tills is probably best.

One of the reasons why I prefer self service.

Well if you are in a rush you would use self service anyway. I prefer the checkout as I like to be served by a person and it’s nice to have a pleasant exchange. I wouldn’t be having long chats though, they are working and I just want my shopping. As it is we only get 2 manned checkouts these days so you have to be prepared to wait.

JLouM. ...Totally agree with you, nice to chat if the assistant isn't too busy & can spare a few minutes. I love a nice smiley assistant who goes out of their way to be friendly,it makes my day & my service users like it too...

Hate those self service tills, nearly always have to call for assistance anyway!

Yes along as its clear that the checkout is open for chatters. I personally hate talking to others in the shop

I always try to be as quick as possible at the till except for the rare occasions where there is no one else in the queue where I may slow down a bit. I hate waiting in queues myself so don't want to hold others up further back in the queue. I don't think it would be unfair to say some people take 3x as long as me at the till for the same quantity of goods. I don't like self-service machines although use them occasionally.

Doesn't really bother me to be honest sometimes it's nice to have a little chat when getting served but once it's done I go

🤣 i know exactly what you mean but chatty tills i’m not sure would ever catch on. In theory the self service tills are supposed to be for people in a rush but I’ve noticed more and more that people are using them for their weekly shops

Bad idea, some people would take it to the extreme and be there chatting for ages, also it would never catch on with the stores as they want people through the tills quickly , that way they need less tills open and less staffing cost.

No. It's bad enough choosing which checkout to queue at and then realising the alternative was a better choice,to have a chatty or not chatty lane would just add to the anxiety. I am thinking a home delivery in future is a better option to avoid it all!

They already have checkouts for people who DON’T like to chat. They’re called Self-Service Checkouts.

It is frustrating when you are in a rush so it is probably best to use the self service tills. Unfortunately that chat they are having at the till could be the only person they speak to all day.
