Smacking kids

Ask a Question

So smacking kids is now a criminal offence in Scotland. Should the rest of the uk follow suit?

What do you think of this?

I totally agree with the smacking ban. I can count on 1 hand how many times i smacked my kids and i had 4 !! A tap on the hand if they are doing something dangerous like grabbing for a plug socket is ok in my world but actually whacking a child I think is barbaric. Thats my opinion anyway.

I agree that some people lose control and take it too far, and no child deserves to be abused, especially if the parent hasn’t taken the time to explain to them what they’ve done wrong. I’m not against smacking, but I agree that there are other ways you can discipline a child

hspexy I agree - I think there is a big difference between a single smack for doing something wrong, compared to beating... in my opinion, it’s not abuse if it is a single smack on an irregular basis for doing something dangerous and you explain why afterwards..

I don't plan on smacking my son. A tap on the hand maybe if he is trying to get something that's dangerous but I don't agree with smacking. My mum never did it to me, although I do remember being chased up the hallway when I refused to eat my dinner. She grabbed me, gave me a tickle and carried me back to the table, but I don't remember either parent hitting me. I knew the consequences of my bad behaviour, but none of them were being hit. My mum had 'the look' and if I got that I knew I was in trouble if I didn't stop what I was doing! I'm now 28 but my mum still has the look and I still respect it! You can discipline a child without smacking.

Ive heard Wales is soon to follow and I believe the rest of the UK should do the same, i was smacked as a child but my Dad would sometimes go a bit too far and for me that has put a strain on the father daughter bond, amongst some other things. I look after children, the thought of smacking them just seems abhorrent. You've lost control and the point you're making if you smack a child.

Next thing they'll ban parents from keeping the kids under control because it's "oppressive". However, is beating kids bad? Yes.

Being a parent isn't a task that everyone is able to do but anyone can be because there are no laws or restrictions that require people to prove if they're capable and intelligent enough to. It's also like voting for a political party, anyone can do and that's a huge flaw (one of the reasons I don't like "democracy" very much).

I think that smacking should be done within reason and only as a last resort. For example, a smack on the bottom or on the hand is reasonable as long as it doesn't leave behind any physical damage.

YES i dont believe in smacking kids, my 2 kids are quite good, i give them chores to do and end of month they get paid for doing them and if the misbehave they get their spends reduced or devices taken off them.
