Smacking Banned in Scotland

In the News

BBC News - Scotland becomes first part of UK to ban smacking

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-54825151

I thought that smacking was banned in the UK a long time ago, but it seems that I was wrong.

I never smacked my boy, but just talked to him in a deep voice when he was being extra naughty.

I know it's controversial, but what are your thoughts?

What do you think of this?

This all depends on the reason why a smack is needed. If a child was to hit me a smack back it would have.

I must admit that I also thought it was already banned. I think there are better ways to discipline children, so I support this.

I was never smacked as a child, my mum had the look, that was enough to tell me I had done something I shouldn't have.

I live in Scotland, I have never hit my son and I don't intend to. There are ways to discipline children without violence.

In my family, smacking is how we were disciplined but it also ensured that we rarely did anything to upset our parents. Looking back, it definitely caused a lot more damage than it solved and when I found myself doing it to my little sister, that was a wake-up call. Its definitely not something I would ever revisit.

Mum never hit us - she left it to Dad when he came home or she locked us under the stairs!

Smacking should be banned you wouldn't allow another human to hit your child and possible cause a mark or permenant damage so why would you want to? Maybe a tap on the hand or butt.

I thought it was also banned, and the ban had been in place for a number of years. Can’t say I favoured a ban, but with how things are these days, if you can’t even say certain things or use certain tones, smacks were bound to be made an offence

I thought smacking was banned in both England and Scotland years ago.

The Children Act 2004 stipulates that it is illegal to hit a child if the force results in bruising, swelling, cuts, grazes or scratches. So long as a parent acts with what can be considered as reasonable force within the home, it is likely that they will be found to have acted within the boundaries of the law. This is the current English Law

We teach them not to hit at school or in a play ground, yet teach them its ok to puts hands on them. doesnt make sense to me.
