Can Someone Explain the Badges on This Site to Me?

As I engage more on this site I get more badges for various things but what does that actually mean? What happens when you get certain badges? Sorry if it's an obvious one.

It's like virtual trophies/achievements. They don't have any real value.

I even had forgotten they existed. lol
