Spring is Here

Other

Hi everyone!

Looks like spring is well on its way and I am just so happy about it!

We moved into a new house in September last year. It has a lovely big garden but as we were heading into winter we've done absolutely nothing with it yet.

Any great ideas/buys for the garden?

We have a German shepherd and three children so I'm thinking flower beds probably won't last but I'd like to plant some in pots and do a garden bed in the front garden. Our old house just had a concrete yard so for me this is very exciting!

Good idea initially to use containers for flowers etc . You can buy plug plants from supermarkets pretty cheaply to fill them . Even look for the half dead ones they sell off cheaply , they've just forgotten to water them and most recover in a few days .

Maybe reserve a border for flowers ? Initially plant 2 or 3 rose bushes (kept me off the garden when I was a kid !

Its now the right time to plant fruit trees , Plums , Pears , Apples etc . Again from the supermarket bare root trees can be bought for £3 - £4 . Note the eventual size as many these days are dwarfing rootstock for patio containers and will only ever reach 4 - 5 feet . Find a spot in your garden where they can stay and after a couple of years you will have kilos of fruit every year off a normal size tree .

Its probably about now that the weeds will start showing their ugly heads try to keep on top of them or they spread all over ,

Don't forget to get the kids involved . For one thing it's cheap labour but more importantly they are less likely to run all over a bit of garden they have weeded and planted themselves 😀

TheChimp All great minds ,as they say . Need to think about positioning of course as they will be there for years !

What about some nice fruit trees?

We planted a couple of cherry trees when our doggo died a couple of years ago and hopefully we'll get a crop this season (unless the naughty birds get to it first).

I love the fruit tree ideas! My children go through so much fruit too would be perfect. I'm going to have a look at what would work best.
