Do You Have a Strong Accent ? Do Voice Activated Devices Understand You ?

Ask a Question

My son set up a Google Home in my bedroom. It's similar to Alexis, as it's voice activated, however my Welsh accent must be very strong as it's takes me three or four attempts to set the alarm as she keeps saying a completely different time e.g. 1:30 was 3 etc

I feel his pain, I really started to dislike Google, if I remember I put on a posh accent, otherwise I start insulting her as she continued to either ignore me of does random things🙂

She struggles with mine too (I’m from the north east of England) . It’s a pain lol

Alexa doesn't seem to have any problem understanding me. I don't have much of a North West regional accent though.

It doesn't help if you think she's called "Trevor" either.

This video always amuses me - but don't play if easily offended.

I don’t think it is just your accent, we can say something to Alexa and sometimes can take a few goes before she obeys. Just a thought her name is Alexa and not Alexis lol. Although I see your son is using Google home.

This thread reminds me of Miranda trying to rearrange a delivery. She tried a few times saying Tuesday in her best voice, but it only worked when she said it in a ‘normal’ (dare I say common) voice.

I have a thick geordie accent (so I'm told). Someone a while ago on here advised me you can train Alexa to recognize your voice. So she now better understands me 😂. I would imagine Google has a similar function.

Mine always struggle to understand me as well so I don’t use the voice activated features anymore. Oddly enough though, my mother’s tablet always understands me first time. It can’t understand her though…
