Supermarket Grocery Price Hikes

I have the greatest respect for everyone involved in the supermarket infrastructure. From the shelf stacker to the lorry driver, as they are doing an amazing job at this very difficult time in keeping food on my table.
However, on the past coupe of occasions I have noticed that various item in my basket have shot up in price dramatically! I am not loyal to any particular store to be honest , but I have noticed these changes in Tesco , Sainsburys and Asda. For instance I buy a lot of own brand items and today I bought some yoghurts and noticed that they were 31p dearer than they were two weeks ago!! This increase is echoed in various other products throughout the stores. I cannot explain why the prices have shot up so much, as I am unaware of shortages in supplies of products, with the exception of flour and spread. I seriously hope that these supermarkets are not taking advantage of our shopping habits and reaping the benefits?! Has anyone else noticed inexplicable price increases in the supermarkets recently ??
Definitely noticed price increases in many stores, and not only that a lack of deals/offers in most stores now, even prices on Amazon seem to be more than they used to, they do just seem to be cashing in a bit on the fact that you can't shop around like you used to.
Its a shame if they are doing it for pure commercial gain and not due to greater production costs. On a more pleasant note, at least the fuel prices have fallen and I guess that balances things a little more. However it's still a concern.
Yeah, I've noticed prices creeping up at Tesco over the last couple of months.
Don't know whether it's due to overheads or just plain profiteering.
Popped into Tesco yesterday for the first time in a couple of months, I was amazed at some of the prices.
ยฃ2.50 for some fondant fancies! you can usually get them for at least a pound cheaper than that.

Both have gone downhill to be honest.
Crispy Pancakes used to be one of my favourites with a lovely outer and a lava interior that was hotter than the sun.
Unfortunately, like most stuff these days, they changed the recipe which ruined them 
From what I have heard, this is not profiteering. Supermarkets, despite looking like they have done well out of this are actually having to spend a lot more money with a big reduction in sales too. If you think about it, they have employed more staff (including a friend of mine as a temporary manager) and are getting less people through the tills with the health restrictions. You only have to compare the amount of customers to staff when walking through and the numbers are almost equal. There is also the possibility of suppliers having to raise their prices because of various factors such as decreased production levels and therefore less money coming in. I mentioned this elsewhere but the meat trade in America for instance is suffering because of people becoming ill and not being able to work in the processing plants. In retail, the winners are local convenience shops in my opinion. I hardly went into our local shop before this but with the option of queueing for an hour at Tesco or going straight in just for some milk, local it is!

TheChimp The media love a story about someone who is guaranteed to grind the public's gears. Look at that bloke mentioned by rararachel who gets stuff free from people who give it to him in good faith to use and pass on but he sells it and makes a lot of money in the process.
Hi rach2503 I am on a very tight budget . Yes supper market price have gone way up in price. Bread was ยฃ1.25 now ยฃ1.95. So I brought a bread maker waiting on it to come then make my own bread. And all so all the baking stuff has gone up has well. Fruit and veg is a hit or miss when it's good stuff it's to dear and when it's not so good it's cheaper. But you can't keep it because it's started to go bad. I've just started my Own fruit and veg garden.

Got some tomatoes, rocket, lettuce and radish in the greenhouse. The radish are nice and peppery atm.
We used to have a bread maker, but when I factored in all the ingredients, the cost of cooking it and my time, I decided that it was just easier and cheaper to go to a shop and buy a loaf.
TheChimp I find tomatoes very hard to grow. Not sure what I am doing wrong . Are radish easy to grow and lettuce. I've got carrots, sweet, leeks. Brussels spinach, growing in pots. Then they will go into big tubes . Has I am disabled this is easy for me.
Yes its tough on the purse! we've been baking too and as you say, the flour issue has kind of put a halt to that. My kids have been planning their veg plot for weeks and we have been busy sorting that out and sowing seeds. But I've also noticed that seeds seem so expensive too! I have noticed that there are groups on social media that do 'seed swaps'. People having too many of a certain type happily swapping for some they would like etc. And even people giving away excess seeds and plants too! It's maybe worth a look to see if there are any groups near to you. One thing I think the lockdown will teach us, is to be less dependant on big stores. I'm more than happy to grow what I can in the space I have and shop locally in independent stores if I can afford to. Maybe a little 1940's ethos of 'dig for victory' and 'make do and mend' are good today as they were back then?
nicolajaynehend I tend to cheat and buy tomato plants! But as for everything else, yes very easy to grow. Radishes and cut and come again lettuce are very easy to grow. my kids grow carrots on 2 ltr pop bottles with their tops cut off! great little carrots and the bottle/planter has a small footprint and so can be popped in the smallest space!
Rach2503 if this helps you you get seeds for 99p off eBay. That's wear I got mine. And they have all took and no p&p. I've just ordered some more seeds. 
Hello . Some prices have gone up due to things you wouldnโt think about. Flour and the lack of it is due to lack of packaging as a lot of factories are closed not because there is not much flour and there are not as many offers as companies are trying to stay afloat at the mo not just thinking about profit but keeping their sales up so people have jobs to go back to . Just another way to look at it
Apparently you can go to the bakery counter at any supermarket that bakes on site and they will bag and sell you their flour.
