MrsCraig I imagine you are talking about your son when you say, “ allowed to teach him how to swim”

MrsCraig Are you saying that if anything happens to you or your best friend that under no circumstances must your son be allowed to learn how to swim? That is what you actually infer I feel eyeballkerry was correct when suggesting an edit.

davidstockport that is not what is inferred at all! My best friend was clearly joking when she said it! She obviously wants him to learn how to swim, she would like to be the one to do it, but she wouldn't be stop someone else doing it! You have clearly not understood the way the comment was meant, it was a light hearted comment made by my friend, which you have misinterpreted.

MrsCraig It's strange that two (or possibly more) of us misinterpreted it.

Incidentally your answer also probably needs editing. "but she wouldn't be stop someone else doing it!"

IMO the word "be" is totally unnecessary".😀

I can swim but I'm not a strong swimmer as I no upper body strength

I want to get lessons for my boys when all this covid is over don't want to sent them anywhere with a group unnecessarily right now.

I feel if I try to teach them they would mess around too much

I taught mine from a young age, but had the advantage of having our own pool, then they had lessons at school. Not as much as I did as when I was younger, their lessons seemed to get cancelled a lot due to the coach company.

Imnotcheap Upper body strength is not as important as leg strength when swimming, if you feel you can't swim too well because of lack of upper body strength I suggest you find someone to check out your technique.

I'm the same...too little upper body strength and also I keep holding my breath which isn't a good idea! Am back off to lessons once I feel better Covid is under control

I haven't learnt to swim. The first time I went to a swimming lesson, when I was little, my teacher didn't watch me properly and I ended up in hospital. I never went back

I know how frightening that is. I had a similar experience. I was pushed in the deep end by a classmate during a lesson. Thankfully the lifeguard was paying attention & got to me quickly. I refused to go back again & so never learnt how to swim. My sons can swim. Not through school tho, My OH taught them but I could never go watch.

Glitterandgold It sounds like a terrible experience what you went through. Most of my family can swim but I would never go with them, even the smell of the chlorine gets to me

I never had swimming lessons, and because my my mum can't swim, she never took me. When I had lessons with the school, I had no confidence in the water, and won't go into pools, unless it's in the kids shallow end. I did take my daughter to swimming lessons, as I didn't want her to miss out. She then got her junior life saver, which she used to hrlp my friend's son.

I think swimming is a bit like learning to drive! The confidence and freedom it gives you is amazing!

It is a life saving skill and I think all children should be taught it ASAP.

I wish I could but I am scared of the sea since I was very young

I do swim in the sea but don’t like putting my feet down, so I wait for the waves and then get washed up like a beached whale, very stylish way to get out of the sea!

Yes, very confident. It took me ages to get the hang of it, but once I learnt I was buoyant, I could swim forever.

Yes I can and love it. I lived in Asia for a while and the building had a great pool, I tried to swim and hour a day. Very relaxing. I prefer swimming in the sea though, I grew up by the seaside. I learnt around 6/7 years old.

I was a swimming teacher for 8 years, raised by my mother who was also a swimming teacher.. she had me and my brother in the pool at 6 months old and when my father was away (Navy) we had to go to all of her swimming lessons.. I was never out of the water!
