Things Not to Reheat in the Microwave

In the News

I thought i knew everything about microwaves as i have had one for many years but after reading this article i realise there are some things i dont

For example defrosting meat in one is dangerous for creating bacteria, as is microwaving a kitchen sponge which can increase the bacteria on it instead of killing it

Re -heating up a chinese meal with rice i think i had heard about years ago but i have still done it, this can cause food poisoning 🥴

I know most metal based items cannot be put in it, but they mention some non metallic items that give off cancer related pathogens or residue when heated up

It does have its uses I , i like to make my morning porridge in it as it only takes 3 minutes to make a large glass bowl full, it would take a lot longer on the gas hob in a pan and cause a sticky mess to clean up

I dont have an oreo biscuit with it though 😀

For convenience I tend to buy the 2 minute microwave rice packets. Which took manufacturers a long time to develop. They had to come up with a way to get round the Bacillus Cereus bacteria risk.

TerenceMealing I will continue to microwave my Chinese takeaway the next day whatever they say.

ACR I make homemade Chinese with packet rice. So what if I want to reheat my special fried rice for breakfast? Is that allowed?

I suppose its just a game of russian roulette , or chinese roulette in this case, the only difference is the chinese roulette wheel might collapse after a few spins 😜

TheChimp I believe the same rules apply with microwave packet rice. Once you have cooked it in the microwave you are not meant to reheat it again 🍛

No P, dont worry, rice pudding is ok, its the reheated chinese rice in takeaways that can be dangerous

Heres what one article says

Can you microwave takeaway rice?

Each time it cools down, you offer more opportunities for the harmful bacteria to multiply, making it harder to kill them all off the next time you stick them in the oven or microwave. This is particularly true for one particular takeaway favourite – rice – which can host spores of a nasty bug called Bacillus cereus

Heres another

Can you reheat rice? Tips for preventing food poisoninghttps://www.medicalnewstoday.com › articles

It is possible to reheat rice, but people must take precautions to ensure it is safe to eat. Rice is more problematic than some other leftover foods as it may contain bacteria called Bacillus cereus, which survive some cooking processes . This bacterium is often the cause of food poisoning from reheated or cooked rice

TerenceMealing Thank you for that @TM. I've just finished another batch tonight and was worried I'd have to fling it as its made with my little girls prescription formula instead of milk (she has milk allergy) so we couldn't have eaten it if it wasn't safe to freeze! Hate food waste 🙈

I think this article is another one meant for a different market - would UK users reheat Chinese in their foil containers. I certainly never would. Meat may well reach the 'danger zone' (temperature wise) when bacteria start to multiply - but most of us would defrost to immediately cook which kills the bacteria.

I once put a cup in the microwave to heat some milk up, and the cup had one of those gold edgings on it around the rim. Sparks where flying everywhere! 💥 Used a plain cup ever since!

Yes L, you have to be careful with the dishes etc you use in the microwave, some have metallic patterns on them that can spark and potentially short circuit it
