I Think I Have Coined a New acronym.......FOBS

Ask a Question

Fear of Being Scammed. I am very careful and never open emails or texts that look even slightly dodgy. But the other week i got a truly convincing call from 02 but realised it was a scam just in time, but not before sorting it for ages with the real O2. I'm hardened to it but now live in fear of being scammed to the extent i will often cancel rather than get caught out. Currys Perks were offering 40% off cinema tickets but after filling in forms it got to booking the tickets which i wasnt ready to do and knew it would lead to a payment, i just deleted. Does anyone else find themselves holding back due to FOBS?

Anyone can get caught out. I think I am quite aware of dodgy emails and texts but some can be very convincing. I usually spot them. I did get caught out by a hacker on Facebook about year ago. I thought it was one of my contacts but it was her account that had been hacked. I thought I was speaking to her as it could well have been how it was worded. Anyway I stupidly sent a requested code thinking I was helping her with something. They hacked all my contacts accounts and my own and caused many problems. There was no money involved though but all personal details no doubt hoping to get to money eventually. Anyway I had to delete my account and create a new one from scratch and I lost some friends along the way. I think you have to be very careful you are on the correct website as there are so many that look very similar but are actually fake. I looked up Next and it kept taking me to free spins and fill in details. It was dodgy. I tried again and then got the proper website with proper Next goods. I’ve also had a WhatsApp with Hi mum, I broke my phone and can you text me on this number? Well I’m not a mum! My husband had it too and he’s definitely not one!

JLouM that kid with broken phone has been doing the rounds for a long time so I am hoping by now no one is falling for it. Hacking is another big problem, glad you didn't lose any money but the stress and time to sort it out is a pain in the proverbial

Don't blame you at all and sometimes it's hard to know if it's a scam my other half did it a few months back he said Wilko's are selling everything off on there website and I was hmm ok so I got him to send me the link I looked at it right away said it's fake website and shown him the real one he's had the same with m&s so now he goes right to the website instead of following the link to them

Leannexxx I did mention something similar last week L, scammers are sending e mails as if from temu to purchase pallets of goods , as they used to do with amazon

I am getting quite a few each week , but i do order from them so it is either a coincidence or they know this somehow

Most are just chancers and everyone gets the same scam e mails

Leannexxx this is the problem with tech advances overtaking the knowledge to put things right when they go wrong. Safeguards should be built in and no scams should be able to get through, no hacking, no kids being groomed online, the whole thing is sickening.

Lynibis definitely agree only good thing is that I can set my daughters phone and tablet so I can see everything she's doing online and she can only get phone call and text from the people in her phone book

Leannexxx that is good. My boys were grown up before all this tech, they are 50 and 48 in the new year lol. So glad I didn't have to deal with it.

Lynibis honestly I didn't want to tell her the dangers on online but because it's become the norm I've had to tell her the truth and I'm very lucky that she came to me when someone was writing stuff to her in a game by dm I reported this person and they got a lovely message from me haven't seen him on that game since

I think it’s good to be very cautious though i agree it can be stressful at times. Usually i trust my gut and if something seems dodgy i usually just avoid it
