Do You Think Less of Someone on Minimum Wage?

Ask a Question

Iv been on minimum wage most of my life. I consider myself bright and an all round good honest kind person. Iv never been materialistic, always got by and never asked for or taken a penny from anyone. My credit score is perfect.

But a guy I went to school with came into our shop and said “wow you’re still here.. and I thought you were pretty smart at school” Ever since I have struggled self esteem wise feeling am I looked down on because of my low wage?

You should never let anyone else change your opinion of yourself. The fact that you have been in the same job for so long just goes to show that you are appreciated by your bosses!

Your resilience and integrity shine through your journey. Don't let someone's narrow perspective define your worth. Your character, honesty, and perfect credit score speak volumes about your true success. Have you considered confronting such comments and expressing the pride you take in your values and accomplishments? Those who make such remarks often harbor their own feelings of inadequacy, attempting to project it onto others they encounter.

I'm on minimum wage so no. I'd say the person who said that is insecure

Wow, just shows what a rude and disrespectful person they are! You shouldn’t be judged for having and holding a job.🌼

From what you have said, you are a kind and genuine person. That is rare these days. 🌸

I don't. You are smart! Look at all the positive things you've shared about yourself here 😃 Only he can answer to the reason why he said this but try not to take it personally or read to much into it. This is one of the core societal issues - how many people perceive each other based on job/income.

I think if anyone says they haven’t had similar thoughts when seeing someone would be lying but I definitely wouldn’t ever say it. Plus it sounds like you’ve found a balance that works for you so who can look down on that.

As long as you support yourself and enjoy what you do that’s all that matters

All the people I know who work the 'graveyard' shifts work for tuppence and do work that many others wouldn't get out of bed for. Amazing folk. It's good folk like you that keep the country ticking over. When people ask what you do there's usually a value judgement behind it. Tell em you're an astronaut or a nuclear physicist out of hours lol.

I don't judge someone by the job that they do, I judge them by the person that they are. Do not focus on other people's prejudices. You have a job that pays the bills and from what I've seen on here are a lovely person. As long as you are happy it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about what you do for a living.

That's absolutely awful. I really dislike people like that. If you are happy in what you do then that is all that matters, I'm sure you greet people with a lovely smile and are happy to help when they come in the shop.

As the old saying goes we all come into the world with nothing and we all go out with nothing !

Why do you allow some person from the past to affect your confidence in yourself? Why? Why? Why? Do you think he gives it a second thought, no, so why should you, as a virtuous person, do so. Your only flaw would seem to be allowing others to upset you which would indicate already having low self esteem.

A group of 3 teen girls walked by me once. I was in my 50s, a little overweight and no make up, but otherwise presentable. One said, quite loudly, 'omg if I looked like that I would top myself.'. I just inwardly laughed and went on my way knowing the universe would take care of their unpleasantness.

There are a lot more people on the minimum wage nowadays sadly such has been the loss of skilled jobs in our economy. I've known well paid people, they are very competitive and try to put others down so they get promoted ahead of others. Often these people are actually quite incompetent and not good for the company they work for in many ways. In my opinion most politicians are utterly incompetent and not fit for purpose but take home huge sums when you factor in expenses and other perks.

If you are working in a shop where people have full choice whether to buy the products in that shop it just seems extremely honest work unlike so many high paid jobs which exploit others in what they charge or through taxation.

I have far less respect for often high wage earners who exploit others to get their high wage.

No I don’t and you should realise there are many low paid workers doing a great benefit to society. Remember all those supermarket staff who continued working throughout COVID.

I'm a Support Worker on a Mininim wage as is my partner, we aren't extravagant in any way. We have one daughter, she's a Student Radiographer, her University costs paid for as her Da put away money til she was 16,he wanted me to stay home & bring our daughter up so I did for the first eight years of her life. Our daughter always credits me for the work I put in at home teaching her,she was ahead of most of her class but spent time helping others if they needed it.

My partner paid in £16,000 to AXA Sunlife & received £24,211,that has paid for Uni & anything else she has needed we paid between us.

I don't think less of a person on these wages. I do however judge those that can afford to pay their staff a better wage like big corporate companies but choose not to. I have issues with them. They look out for the fat cat owners managers and share holders

Having the brains and right experience and qualifications doesn't get you the position you are best for. Being a manipulative person who stabs people in the back and gather dirt on their superiors tends to grease the wheels and help to climb the various ladders in work and society. It's all about who you know and keeping track of who has what skeletons hidden away. Just ignore comments like that. Some people look like they are happy and doing well, but if you get too close you start to see the cracks.
