Have You Thought about Making Wine or Brewing Beer?

Ask a Question

We tried to make wine a few years ago and still have the stains in the airing cupboard as proof. Bought all the kit to get started. It was a disaster! I wait for the supermarkets to offer 25% off so stock up then.

Have you tried making wine or brewing beer?

I have tried a lot of years ago but it did not turn out great, I know people that have had success but it encouraged them to drink a little too much.

Howmuch I’m impressed that your friends produced something worth drinking.

Pjran One had a cellar set up specifically to produce beer, it was very strong and worked out very cheap. Not sure I would try again after making elderberry wine that tasted great but made my throat itch like crazy. I would love to have a go at making spirits.

Howmuch my Father used to make his own brew but my husband only drank it out of politeness.

I used to make great wine and hooch. But it is a hell of a lot of effort and gave up after I unexpectledly made a super strong brew that made me ill. 😬

Pjran I didn't realise I had created such a high alcohol content. It was a total accident, so I drank it for a week, thinking it was only an average Wine strength. Then I bought a device to measure ABV and it was around 35%. It was not what I had planned.

Not worth the effort or cost of getting the gear . then lovingly nurturing it only to realse that it is a total waste of time and effort . Perhaps if you wanted to brew a particular one for a hobby ?

I really think it's the same as strawberry picking each summer - it a rite of passage. It's something you have to try, no matter what the results are. I've tried the home brew route with some shocking results and wines with a better outcome. I've definitely embraced the flavoured vodkas/gins with hand picked produce with success. A friend recently made marrow rum - wow! knocks your socks off! 😆

sunny101 I’m not into spirits other than the occasional G&T.

Pjran I tend to make flavoured options as gifts for Christmas. Orange brandy, apple brandy, blackcurrant vodka and sloe gin. It's a way of playing with things that grow in the garden. (some are amazing and some........🙄 🤣 )
