Being Gracious About a Gift You Don't Like

Ask a Question

Do you think even when a gift may not be to your taste you should still be polite and gracious. Ive had a recent situation where i was asked to take it back and perhaps buy a gift voucher!!!

What do you think of this?

If I was told to take a gift back and get them a gift voucher, I would indeed take the gift back, get my money and they wouldn't be getting anything else! I always get a gift receipt so that if they don't like it, it doesn't fit then they can take it back themselves. If someone has spent their hard earned money on something for you then yes you should be polite and gracious.

Flow777 exactly. You smile politely, say thanks and put it in a cupboard.

If the gift giver gives you the receipt with the gift to take back if the gift is not suitable for you then it is fine when is rare. I would say no matter what you get you should not complain sometimes it is best to ask the person what kind of things they like.

Rude not to just accept the gift and say Thank You regardless, you can always at a later date sell it on eBay or re gift it if you really don't like it. I can't believe anyone would have the cheek to ask you to take it back, that is just wrong.

I would never dream of being so ungrateful to someone who has taken the time to buy me a gift. You must have been so shocked. I honestly cannot believe how that person reacted to a gift 😍 I forgot to say I would end up bringing it back and knowing me getting a gift voucher just to keep the peace 😍

I have family members that you get the gift and think "oh you shouldn't have....." And the whole time thinking "I really wish you hadn't". I know this sounds ungrateful, but generally it's because they're thoughtless gifts. I put effort and thought into what I get for people, but when I get a 35 year old second hand cushion complete with dribble stains, there's no thought there

I mean if it was my parents or siblings that i was close to that bought me something i wouldnt use i would tell them (although they would tell i didnt like it from my face - it gives everything away). If it was a different family member then id say thanks and try to look pleased then give it to my mother or sell it 🙊 I have some sort of phobia of receiving gifts anyway so everyone close to me knows not to buy me something unexpected. I buy my own things using their bank cards and then tell them what they have bought me 🤣

My mum told my sister on Christmas Day she didn't like her gift and said she should take it back . It ruined the day and really upset her (my dad was dying at the time and she hadn't had time to shop - so bought something rather than nothing).

My nephews complain way too much about what we give them, whether during Christmas or another season so if they don't like it, their loss. Spoiled brats, tbh.

Their sister is way nicer and appreciates what she is given.

Omg, I find that totally shocking that anybody could do that. If somebody has taken the time and spent their money on choosing a gift for me I am delighted, I'm not thinking do I like it or not. What an awful attitude.

No matter what gift I get I am always greatfull. Someone has taken the time and effort to buy you that gift and someone has spent there hard earned money on it as well. there is no way I would ever ask anyone to take it back and even if it wasn’t my taste I would still like it because someone has gone to the effort of buying it for me
