Unusual Japanese Statue

In the News

Just read about a seaside town in Japan who decided to use emergency covid funding to build a giant statue of a squid 🦑

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56978075

The 13m-long statue cost approx £165,000.

I could think of better things to spend the funding on, but this town has experienced a large drop in tourists. Perhaps they think this will lure the tourists back?

I’ve seen that. Silly isn’t it. That’s funds well spent. The squid will help Image

It might help lure back domestic tourists interested is seeing something novel. You will likely see a lot of pictures and footage of the squid on Japanese Instagram, YouTube, etc accounts. This area is on a peninsula there are nice beaches and lots of scenic places to visit.

Clearly they haven't noticed that tourism has dropped off worldwide due to covid?! It might help them when things get back to normal though. I can't believe it cost that much, still, at least one sculptor is eating well.

I've watched enough Japanese videos to see that the Japanese love going to places and then taking a selfie next to a famous statue or building so I guess this could work in order to bring in extra tourists for many decades. It may actually be a good long term investment although on the face of it initially looks like pretty stupid use of that money.
