Visit to Your GP

I'm not a regular to my GP and when I do go it's because I really need to. At my last visit, I ended up feeling rushed and almost escorted out to leave. This left me with unanswered questions. Is this about targets or is it a sign I just need to change my GP? I'd be interested in knowing how your GPS look after you and if you feel it's all just a rushed affair when you get there or if it genuinely feels like you have been looked after and cared for. Perplexed is an understatement.
Appointment are short and in high demand, the more people they see the better the stats look. It must be hard for them I imagine they are terrified of missing something important.
If this happened to me I would deffo be considering changing GP's, I know they have a lot of people to see but for a health concern you want to know as much as possible if they are unable to give you answers they should refer you to someone that could.
My GP is still only doing telephone appointments at first then if they feel like they need to see you after the telephone appointment they will book you in. I think over the phone you can't explain things.
My GP is great, but it takes 4-6 weeks to get an appointment.
If I need to see someone ASAP, I can phone at 8am and they can normally fit me in.
Surgery has stopped doing telephone consultations now.
I know this GP nightmare trying to get appointment at 8:30 I've been waiting for nearly 2 hours to get hold of someone
Our GP is good but there is definitely an issue when trying to get an appointment. Mr T was telephoned by them this morning and asked to make an appointment and the earliest he can get to discuss the issue is 10th Nov!!
tumblespots That's been the norm for a long time if you want to see a dedicated GP. Can't Mr T see someone else?
TheChimp He'd rather not as some of the other doctors aren't as clear in their explanations.
tumblespots Then the wait is what Mr T is going to have to put up with, sorry.
As I've said, I had to wait 6 weeks to see my GP, but I could have seen another one a lot earlier.
I know it's a pain, but that's just the way it is atm.
At least we don't have to pay for treatment like SisterofChimp who is in the US. Medical insurance payments are just mental.
TheChimp I feel it will only get worse. I have heard rumours that the government wants to charge us to see our GPs - if so that will be another retrograde step!
tumblespots I'm not sure. I've heard that they want to make GPs work evenings and weekends. Will have to pay them more, I suppose.
I love my GP, but she's dizzy af
TheChimp I suppose that would be to cater to those who are working all day but, yes, I imagine they would be paid more for it.
My currrent gp surgery is fantastic, yes they sometimes have to rush you (appointment tied are only 10 mins) but they try and take as much time as possible abd you can ask for a double appt
I was once told/told off by a receptionist that GPs are allowed 10 minute appointment per patient, if you had complex medical problems you needed to request a double appointment. Not sure how true is, practitioner nurses are a lot better as they seem to have more time, see them for diabetes and asthma.
I have been told to book a double appointment slot to see the nurse next time but have never been offered that option with the GP - who I have only actually 'seen' over the telephone in the last two years. Its not been that much a problem for me as the nurse overseas my treatment once the GP made the diagnosis anyway.
The regular receptionist at my doctors' surgery was not working that day (a nasty piece of work) and an agency staff (on a Monday morning) booked me for a Thursday morning appointment. The doctor arrived and the receptionist spoke to him, and he said I could go in and see him next.
Need the gp You can't come into the surgery. Make an appointment via phone to make an appointment so your emergency can be dealt no sooner than 4 days time.
I haven't been to the Dr since we moved area, but have seen plenty of nurses who have all been fantastic. Our old Dr's I never felt rushed and they always answered questions etc. I was always able to get an appointment the same day too.
I have numerous health issues and sometimes I will get a text from the doctors saying to make an appointment to discuss the health problems I get treated for and take medication .
I ring the surgery and tell them I have received a text and they then ask the reason for needing the appointment and I repeat I received your text .When I say you want to talk to me about my different health issues they then say you have to have more than 1 appointment as you can only discuss 1 at a time . So I say yes and then see the doctor and guess what the doctor says we need to discuss the things your being treated for. I then say I was told you can only discuss 1 thing at 1 appointment and the doctors words are ignore what the wannabe doctors tell you . You are right though Mskaur and the health of the patient is plainly being ignored at every level.
I feel the exact same as you they can't wait to get you out the surgery I feel they have no time for you from covid its still so hard to get a doctors appointment my surgery are wanting you to send a photo of an injury then just give you antibiotics for it 3 courses my friend got and still no doctor appointment its a disgrace
Trying to get an appointment to see a doctor is the first hurdle, lots of mine are just phone calls which are not always practical and on my last appointment I saw a nurse who was unable to help due to the medication I need. I have not seen an actual doctor since before lockdown.
Mine doctor's is always phone at 8 to try and get appointment for that day that's a phone appointment too I wanted to change but the other doctor's near me said I needed a passport and I don't have one
I work as a nurse in a very busy A& E department @ a London hospital we seeing more and more people come in to the department cos they can not get a appointment with their own gp since covid been about I know some GPS give 10 to 15 mins for each person they see its government
I rang my doctors recently told them I've been having pain in my chest going into my stomach for the last 2 week and they said there was no appointments but they would speak to the doctor and get back to me that was 2 days ago and still not heard anything.
As we are not doctors ourselves it is only fair that we get the chance to have all our questions/worries resolved before leaving the surgery.
We have to make two appointments to discuss two things but that makes me feel selfish and taking an appointment from someone else. Also with no medical knowledge how do I know if my symptoms are related or a totally different issue?
There are so many questions I need answered regarding best time to take meds, should I invest in a machine to read my blood sugar levels (though you can't get the needles on prescription any more), what do the numbers mean and how can I keep them stable without knowing what they are. So many things I would like to discuss and surely prevention is better than cure? A little time talking now could surely save time, money and pain in the future.
Gp appointments have been 10 minutes long for a number of years. Long before covid. At least at my surgery. I assume its standard across the board.
