Woman eats once a week so she can feed her six cats

In the News

When i first read this article i did feel sorry for her ,especially with the couples illnesses

But she says she spends £60 a week on her six cats and can only afford one meal a week for herself

So decided to look at the cost of cat food wondering why she spends so much

I had a look on amazon and the first cat food i found was a 10 kilo bag of go cat dry food for £35 , i imagine this would last them a month if not longer

There are probably cheaper and more expensive foods, possibly wet food costs more , i would not know being a dog owner

So i don't know how she is spending £60 a week unless she is feeding them fresh salmon with caviar, which you would not do if you were only eating one meal a week

Also it would not be possible to eat just one meal a week without severe health issues, and they are already in poor health

I am afraid i would be contacting an animal charity if i was in such a dire situation and possibly just keep one or two of the cats

You can feed cats for less than that and feed them well.

Some cats are very fussy feeders. We took in a stray after a week of her crying at our front door. This was before pets were chipped and the we never found the owner despite contacting all vets in a 20 mile radius.

Pjran i suppose it depends what the previous owner was feeding p

telmel but as she was starving you would expect her to eat anything. We took her to vets to get her spade and they found a tumour so after some rather expensive vet bills we gave up looking for the owners. Even the vet said it was possible that she was abandoned! This was before the current crisis.

My old cat only ate things like lamb. The age old put food down they will eat when hungry didn't work with her. she would strave rather then eat what was given to her.

I'm not buying this story I think she's just after some free stuff to be honest if a cat's hungry it will eat anything no matter what age it is

You may be right L

The woman in question doesn't look as if she is starving , possibly she is buying and cooking salmon and sharing it with them , that would explain the high bill

And i did spot a sky box in the background , if you were desperate you would not be paying a subscription for that , unless it is just on freeview

But more fool the reporters if that is the case

No they won't. Mine had an eating disorder and woukd starve rather then eat. She was on medication to stimulate her into eating it was awful and expensive

I believe everyone should have a little joy in there life and if that's tv so be it if you can't afford pets then I'm sorry to say get them a new home because it's not just about food it's very bills too and they are not cheap I would another dog but as I can't afford one I'm not getting one

Leannexxx Its not just the food bills L, as you say its the vets bills, what if one or more of the six cats becomes ill or contracts fleas , flea treatments are expensive to buy , never mind the litter tray sand etc if she keeps them indoors

How is she spending £60 a week, I think she needs to be more savvy with her money, maybe sign up to Latest deals 🙂 she should really buy in bulk that way she could save money and have more cash to spend on herself x

A very, very daft woman. Does she really need to have six cats to feed, etc? She can't even look after her own self let alone so many ungrateful cats who rule the roster.

She could buy a whole chicken for £3.56 and make cat food herself surely?

I have 4 cats and they usually cost just under £20 per week. £60!? What is she feeding them. Steak? Lol

telmel My cats have wet food, and an occasional treat of roast chicken. I always put dry biscuits out if they are feeling peckish but that's it. £20 a week. £60 is just ridiculous.

boepeep I used to have cats years ago B and have a dog now but realise £60 per week to feed 6 cats is excessive considering the tiny portions they consume

It costs me £55 to feed my dog for 2 months. £60 for 2 months if you include her treats. I know I only have one dog but I still can't believe it is costing this much. I know that cats can be fussy, grew up with loads of them, but there must be a way of reducing the cost of feeding them.

MrsCraig Your costs are very feasible M and more realistic , the cat owner either needs to shop at a cheaper supermarket or buy online otherwise reduce the size of the cat family

As i mentioned earlier in the post the shock would come if one or more needed veterinary treatment , those costs would vastly outweigh any food outlay

telmel Very true about vet bills! I paid £100 last month - just for one of my cats to be looked at and steroids. It's a massive sting! With the cost of living now, I definitely will rethink of how many animals I'd have in the future. I have 4 cats, 1 dog and 1 bunny. Wouldn't change them for the world though (:

boepeep That's understandable B, you are obviously a great animal lover, most of us would do anything for our pets as people do for their children

I suppose the only way around vets bills for more than one pet is to buy a multi policy , but then you have another monthly bill to try and pay for on top of everything else , it's swings and roundabouts

telmel It's even more of a worry once your pets are older. My mum's wife passed away last year and so we took in her dog, Charlie. He's 11 now and does have some health problems. My cats are around 9-14. My bunny is 3. It certainly does swing in roundabouts. Once one seems to heal another becomes unwell. God forbid 🙏🏻

boepeep Yes that's a great worry B, animals age so fast and not many escape illness on the way , besides injections for certain viruses like rabies that are compulsory if you travel abroad

I was just reading the other day that dog insurance is going to be compulsory for all breeds in Spain soon, to cover things like dog bites where the owner is sued , it is already in some regions, so it wouldn't surprise me if it happens here , this is the article

Another law there is that you cannot sell dogs in pet shops , you cannot get a licence anymore to do this

Absolutely, we pay £25 a month for our dogs plan with the vets and then the insurance on top of that, that outways the food bill considerably.

I had 3 dogs and I fed them a dry working dog food as well as fresh vegetables and what ever left over meat and it never cost me that much it sounds like she has made the cats fussy eater’s and I agree that you can feed six cats for less than £60 a week
