Zoo's Love Them or Hate Them?

In the News

I've always hated seeing animals in enclosures or barred cages at Zoo, but there is a flip side.

Eleven young penguins have arrived at Chester Zoo, the most in a single hatching season in over ten years. The 'Humboldt' breed is most at risk of extinction, but these little chaps are reported to be healthy and well-cared for by their parents.

So how do you feel about Zoo's? Should they only be for saving animals from extinction, or do you think animals should be on display to educate and entertain?

I don't like zoos but I understand why we have them to protect the breed and a lot of hunting for some animals maybe one day things will change and there will be no need for zoos

I am torn with this one E, on one hand i think wild animals should not be kept in captivity, on the other hand they are usually well looked after , fed well and medically treated , something they dont get in the wild

If they have open spaces to run around then that is fine, but in a confined space behind bars is unacceptable

I think our zoos are better run than most in other less developed countries, where you see the likes of bears tied up and suffering malnutrition for example

I will never set foot in a zoo as I hated it on the couple of times I have visited.

I think there's a place for them to a degree. Will depend very much on the zoo I think. I think they should be run more like safaris tbh. Open enclosures. Any animals should always be in the wild whenever possible, but if its not possible for health etc reasons I can see how zoos can then help with conservation/ protection of endangered species & educational purposes.

Generally I hate to see large animals in zoos in small enclosures but I have to admit I've not been to a zoo for a long time as just don't like the idea of them. I've been to Longleat a few times over the years and I'm comfortable with that but the last sort of zoo I went to was Cricket St Thomas which is closed now but had larger cats in small enclosures and was not impressed. Like Telmel I'm in two minds about them I'm caught between wanting to protect species from extinction and not liking the cramped conditions of some zoos.

I believe zoos should only keep animals that can not look after themselves and would otherwise die. Also animals that are verge of extinction, if we can help.

I love animals and actually used to work in a zoo, unfortunately a lot of the talk of conservation is just pr. i do sometimes still go to zoos but often feel conflicted as i don’t really agree with them

I haven't been to a zoo in a very long time. Probably 20 years. If the zoo has a breeding program to stop extinction then I think that is great but I do worry about them being in small enclosures. There is a good and bad side to both of them.

I'm not a fan of seeing animals in cages or small enclosures ,I live close to Chester zoo. It's been years since I last visited the zoo, probably will never go again.

Although I don’t like seeing animals behind most good zoos do a lot of conservation work to help endangered species.
