What is Burton?
Burton is a huge UK-based high street clothing retailer founded in 1903 by Montague Burton. The company is one of the most successful menswear brands on the high street today and has more than 400 stores in the country and Republic of Ireland. The brand has also expanded branches out of town sites since the 80s, such as at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the West Midlands, where it has had a store since 1989. They are now a trading name of Arcadia Group Brands Ltd., part of the Arcadia Group.
The company’s started out when their founder, who was then 18 years old, borrowed £100 from a relative to open the Cross-Tailoring Company in Chesterfield. After World War II, Montague Burton was one of the suppliers of demob suits to the British government for demobilising servicemen, comprising jacket, trousers, waistcoat, shirt and underwear. It has been speculated that this is the origin of the phrase "the full monty".
In 1946, they acquired the Peter Robinson department store chain as well as expanded by purchasing various other brands, including competitors. Throughout the years, the company purchased or merge with Dorothy Perkins, Debenhams, John Collier and Harry Fenton. The quality of their service to their customers is of the highest importance to them. From the knowledge of their in-store assistants, to the purchase their customers make, they make sure their shopping experience is easy and comfortable.
