What is Littlewoods?

Littlewoods was founded in 1923 by John Moores in Liverpool, England. The original company started out as a football pools company called Littlewood Pools. After its losses during its initial operation, John Moores’ partner withdrew from the venture. In 1932, with the help of his family, he expanded his business into mail-order retailing.

Their first mail-order catalogues was sent out to existing subscribers of the betting pools and the take up, mostly women, formed clubs. They then became agents, collecting money for goods ordered from the catalogue from family and friends and distributing goods shipped to them. The business grew and in 1937, the very first Littlewoods high street store was launched. In 2004, the company was merged with Kays Catalogue after being sold to David and Frederick Barclay in 2002. This paved the way to the creation of the Littlewoods Shop Direct Group, now known as Shop Direct Group.
