Mountain Warehouse is a UK-based outdoor retailer founded in 1997 by Mark Neale. The company provides equipment for hiking, camping, skiing, cycling, running and fitness. What sets them apart from competition is that they don’t carry lots of different brands. In fact, almost all of the products they are offering on their stores and website are exclusive to Mountain Warehouse, which means you won’t find them anywhere else.
The company has expanded from a stock clearance business selling only branded products to a business that sells mainly own brand clothing, footwear and equipment. Their own brands include Mountain Life, Parallel and Snapdragon which makes up 10% off the business products but by 2007, own brand products made up 65%. In 2010, they introduced and even more technical clothing range called Mountainlife Extreme which was a clothing range designed to compete with high end brands such as the North Face and Berghaus. The Mountainlife and Parallel branding has gradually been phased out with all clothing, footwear and equipment now branded with Mountain Warehouse. Mountainlife Extreme was replaced by Mountain Warehouse Extreme, with footwear, accessories and equipment also included in the range.
The first Mountain Warehouse store was launched in 1997 and by 2002 they had opened a further 13 stores in factory outlet centres in the country as well as one in Vienna and three concession stores in UK garden centres. Their first high street store was at the London Covent Garden. Today, they have more than 240 stores in the UK, North America and Europe, including stores in Dublin, Ireland, Vienna, Austria, and Poland.
