1940s Fashion
Ask a Question
I was just watching Foyle's War and thought how smart, everyone looked, which is why I think that there are so many 1940s weekends.
Even though it was a time of rationing and make do and mend everyone looked so glamourist. I am not just basing this on TV, but on old photos of my grand parents.
Do you have a favourite decade for fashion ?
My granddaughter loves vintage clothes and used to regularly go to 40s/50s dance nights. She dragged me along one night and I was amazed at how well she danced and dressed. I know layering seems to be all the rage now but I can remember when you would not set foot outside if your blouse showed beneath your jumper or skirts/dresses showed beneath the hem of your coat! As for a petticoat showing, oh my what embarrassment.
No one seemed to mind if you told them something was too short, too tight or your bum looked too big in that, everyone wanted to look right and did not wail about body confidence, size didn't matter, how you wore your clothes did.
The one I find hard to take is wearing workman type boots with feminine dresses and skirts!
My Dad would never leave the house without a shirt and a tie. When he died in 1992, aged 73 we made sure he was dressed in that way, before his funeral.
My grand dad was exactly the same, he even used to do gardening in a shirt and tie , he was always extremely smart man
