Any Advice Please on the Legal Disposal of an Empty Oil Tank?

Ask a Question

Has anybody had to pay for disposal of an empty but NOT cleaned out single walled heating oil tank please? The place we are buying has one and I don't know where to begin looking. A very rough idea of cost would be terrific as we haven't yet signed the paperwork. I can't ask via the D.I.Y. FB page as it's not d.i.y. so have come here for help.

How to dispose of old heating oil tanks. If you're getting rid of your old tank, the specialist technician doing the job will either take it away whole or, if it is too big to do this, cut it up and remove it in sections. They should then take the materials to a recycling centre.

Thanks for looking for me ...the thing is that we're not having a replacement tank ...the tank has been sat in the small garden of the new house for around 15 years ...they evidently didn't want the expense or trouble of having it removed.

I presume it would depend on what it is made of . If metal , then you could find that a local reputable scrapyard would take it off your hands and even give you money for it . If plastic then the "refuse collection" section of your local Councils website should point you in the right direction . Perhaps ask a local garage where they get rid of theirs ?

Golfforall ... ha been there and done that with an old metal one about 20 yrs ago ourselves ... I remember using rollers to move it through the garden. This one is just single skin plastic but daft as it sounds ...I hadn't thought of the council so thanks! I think I've got too much going round in my mind at the mo!

Golfforall you have great faith in local councils. We wanted to dispose of a caravan fridge and just kept going round in circles.

Sorry, I can't help, when we moved here and changed the old crappy single skinned plastic oil tank our plumber cut it up and took it away - all in the price quoted at the outset. I assume you will be replacing the tank? Won't your plumber take the old one away? Anyway, good luck with the move.

It may be that if you need a plumber for anything at all that you could come to an arrangement with them about the disposal of the old tank.

You seem to spend a long time waiting to move and then 'BAM' it's upon you. It can't be easy moving during a pandemic. I hope it all goes well for you. 💐 🏠

We had one and put it on gumtree for free and a guy collected it, as needed a new one without the expense. Win win!

Worth a try!
