Advice Please on a Rice Cooker
Ask a Question
Do any of you use a rice cooker? If so suggestions as to which ones to look at and which to avoid or are they a complete waste of money, time and kitchen space.
Can't help you with this one.
There's only me and MrsChimp, so I just use microwave rice. Lazy, I know, but it's great when knocking up some egg fried rice to go with a curry or Chinese.
TheChimp Thanks, there's only me and MrFlower (he eats loads and we have rice 4/7 nights), normally I boil/steam in pan, just fancied a change but need to know if any good.
If you are already making rice regularly in a pan I personally would say its a waste of space on the worktops.
I just assumed the rice cooker was for those who were not confident cooking rice in a pan on the stove etc.
I obviously may be wrong hence it being just an assumption from me.
Likewise, I assumed they were aimed at those who preferred to 'switch on and leave it'. I was asked if I wanted one (no idea why, Mothers Day has passed, Birthday & Christmas are a long way off). I've always looked at it as a 'fad gadget' but wondered if they were worth it or worked.
In Asia many households own a rice cooker, it does cooks the rice spot on every time. I don't have the space but if I did I would consider one.
Rice cookers are Great. Simple and not to expensive. I’ve used a £30 for years. My mate bought a £15 one still got it. Depends on how fancy you want to go
I think it’s better to buy a decent rice, Tilda, Uncle Bens or a basmati rice. Mine only stuck and became sticky when I tried to economise buting shops own brand long grain rice.
I have a rice cooker which saves me some time in the kitchen. I also add vegetables to cook at the same time and it steams for about 25 minutes. I got my rice cooker from Gumtree as the lady had only used it twice and it was taking up space in her kitchen.
My friend has one and she uses it cook other things in it like chilli and currys, she also uses it to steam veg.
