Keep your cat indoors when birds are most vulnerable: at least an hour before sunset and an hour after sunrise, especially during March-July and December-January, and also after bad weather, such as rain or a cold spell, to allow birds to come out and feed.

Buying a garden scarecrow will keep the birds away from your cat when in the garden.

Is it not natural instinct for the cat to hunt them down?

I'm no help really because :- Cats natural instinct may have been to kill and eat birds but these days it's the owners who feed the cats, therefore, the cats just do it for 'fun', killing our wild birds off one at a time. I believe that cats should be kept indoors where the owners can make sure that birds aren't killed and the cats don't mess in other people's gardens. You wouldn't let any other animal you own roam free to do whatever it wanted, for example if you had a dog... People have a responsibility for their pets behaviour.

i hear what you are saying , we live in a small village , garden is quite big , more than an a acre , so they dont mess anyones garden , not comfortable with locking them up a prison all day , have ordered new bell collars , see if that works

Get some litter trays and keep them inside.

Just keep replacing the collars with bells - you can get them for pennies from amazon. Also keep them well fed (won't stop them altogether but it'll mean they're not hunting for food) - we keep ours in overnight as well as they tend to get mice at nighttime. Unfortunately it's just part of cat ownership and it's horrible - I'm at home in the day so I can intervene a lot with ours and often (but sadly not always) can rescue their catches when they're still alive - we took a baby squirrel to the vets recently and it got relocated to a sanctuary.

thanks , i have ordered new collars with bells ,our cats eat twice a day and theres always biscuits out to graze on when they want , so arent hungry , as you say it doesnt stop them as they mostly catch them and bring them in , let them go and just play with them to start with , i save the small field mice 2-3 times a week ,

i know this sound s silly , but not worried about the mice , we have a lot of owls around here and they reproduce every 6 weeks or so , but bird populations are under threat , they dont catch many , but its always a shame when they do
