Airline to Weigh Passengers before Flying ???

It has to be voluntary A otherwise they could be prosecuted if they made it compulsory

I think it might come under the human rights umbrella

I know airlines would love to do this as they could charge extra as they do with baggage and thus increase their profits

Then it might escalate to peoples width and then height

It makes me laugh where it says it is only to collect data so they can improve economy , yeah !!!

My mother in law comes to visit us quite often, she flies from Belfast. Good luck weighing her before she gets on a plane, they will wish they had never asked.

I can see the issue here but are they wantin to do it to save on fuel for money reasons or the planet

As a child going to the channel island every summer we were weighed with our hand luggage. This was necessary as the plane was rather small and the weight distribution had to be even.

I think it is a good idea because a lot of people are overweight

I'm indifferent. I understand why they want to do this but don't see how they can possibly enforce it

So will really skinny people get a discount?

Gosh this is so hard to comment on, being a Libran I can always see two sides. However, I must admit that it seems wrong that if you are only allowed 22kg of luggage someone who weighs 44kg more than other passengers is carrying an extra 2 suitcases. Also it is extremely uncomfortable when an obese person is invading your seating space.

I think it will be normal practice in future as they are saying it is for safety reasons and currently it is voluntary.

I don’t have a problem with being weighed in itself but I don’t think they can just charge more for certain people unless they take up 2 seats anyway. The idea is for safety and calculations of fuel, luggage and people weight for the efficiency of the flight and to save them money in weight estimation.

Don't see a problem as long as they do it discreetly , a simple plate on the floor by check in with just the weight showing on the check in staffs screen would work.

They should try this in America, it would break their scales. If they introduced surcharges for people over say 120kilos the price of some flights would double.

This could be triggering for someone with anorexia.

I'm a heavy person but must admit I see it as completely fair that passengers are weighed and even have to pay more if heavier. Adult people range from about 50kg to 150kg which is weight difference of 3x. Why should the person who weighs 50kg pay the same as someone 150kg when the cost of fuel for the heavier person will be 3x as much? If everyone over-weight had to pay more for bus, train and air fares this would be strong motivation for them to lose weight and if it forces them to walk for shorter trips this can only be a good thing. At the moment lighter people are subsidising heavier people and that doesn't seem right to me.

I think this is yet another way of putting people of flying. Can anyone really believe that they won't refuel until they have weighed everyone and calculated how much fuel they need? It's just another unnecessary regulation that will become standard practice and not a choice in the future.

They can weigh me, I don't care, I know what I weigh, it's no big deal to me...
