Alternative to Visiting the Tip!

Money Saving

We're only supposed to be visiting tips if we cannot store waste at home safely. Seeing photos of people queueing up for them recently is rather sad and a sure sign of herd mentality.

Anyway, I wanted to suggest an alternative that is potentially better for the environment, possibly less effort for you and could save somebody else money. If anything you are getting rid of is reusable or could be fixed by someone with the right expertise, stick it on Freecycle or Freegle. They are back open for posting items on their websites or apps and asking for it to be essential stuff initially but that is the case with tips anyway.

I've had some great stuff from those sites over the years and given a fair amount away too. It's more satisfying than queueing for an hour to hang around other people in a dirty and dusty environment while a virus is still about! Have fun 😎

I've started putting my s6udf back up on fb marketplace but only things like baby items and payment has to be via paypal and I will leave item outside front door at an agreed upon time so it is all contactless. Just trying to get some room back in the cupboard and some extra money is always handy. I've given stuff away for free before too, definitely some great stuff to be had and helps get rid of stuff.

I've got rid of more advertising for free on Facebook Marketplace. Unfortunately the tip is essential for things like garden waste. I can't see anyone wanting lots of nettles and weeds.

People could start composting their garden waste. You don’t have to have proper compost heaps like Monty on Gardeners World it’s possible to buy green bins. It’s ecological and safe.

Pjran we do have compost bins but we have half an acre of garden plus woodland so it's impossible to get rid of all the garden waste, leaves, weeds etc. We do have a woodburner and we are able to make use of the wood seasoning it (currently burning wood from last year).

rararachel I'm assuming if you have an acre of garden, that puts you in the category of being able to store waste at home safely for now.

Dennab yes we have ways of storing it in the meantime and our household waste site has opened and is very well managed too.
