Amazon Adding Postage Automatically

Ask a Question

Every time I go to order from amazon for items that total goes over £20 that have free delivery amazon always seems to like to add postage that costs extra. Does this happen to anyone else? do you feel disappointed that amazon are trying to subtly charge you more and hope you don’t notice ?

Yes this happens to me too . I always click on free delivery, but sometimes items they say are free delivery they are changing £5 for some reason. I guess that they catch some people out and that's why they probably do it .

hoii I have never noticed the issues as I have prime. Its probably one of amazon's ways to encourage people to get prime.

Ann1984 I did add enough items to make it go over £20 the issue is that amazon still tried to add extra postage cost that I then had to untick and choose the free delivery. I just find it quite sneaky of amazon. Some people won’t even notice and end up paying extra for postage

I've not had problems but I have prime.

My daughter told me that you don't always get free delivery on £20 delivery anymore some are higher. She often uses my account to buy things to save postage

Imnotcheap Don't know if you know but, If you have prime you can add members of your household to your prime. So you can all get prime benefits. I have my sons added to mine. Theres a add household option somewhere within your account.

I too Check my order total before confirming but I just feel disappointed that they still try and add on the postage that costs extra when there’s a free option.

Yes I always have to remember to select free postage but I've made 100s of Amazon orders and not forgotten to do that yet. I don't think Amazon are making a profit on many orders where they offer free postage for £20 which is often much lower than competitors so I guess they are trying to get you to pay. I've bought 5 or 6 items from amazon warehouse that combined only cost £20 and they have often shipped these items separately and if its a bicycle tyre it comes in a huge box. I had a £3 tyre sent in a box that would cost me perhaps £8 to post but obviously Amazon pay less but not that much less surely. Even if they paid a third of the price I paid that won't be profitable as the postage is the same as the tyre cost. I doubt if Amazon have ever made any money out of me to be honest. I mainly buy from Amazon warehouse and always select free postage and most of my orders are around £20-30.

I’ve noticed this as well, although if the basket cost is higher than I’m expecting I always check they haven’t ticked the paid postage option by default. I think it’s sneaky of them not to default to the free option when they advertise it as a £20 spend with free shipping. I don’t think I know of any other companies that default to anything else if you’ve spent the minimum.

Yes, I have experienced that with every order too! Drives me insane if by accident I press pay :/

They do this for non-Prime, even if you reach £20, but once you're over £20 just choose free delivery.

I'm surprised they've not increased the minimum to £25 or £30 like they did for other branches. It's probably coming, though.

i do click the free delivery option when I have an order over £20 but my point is that when I have an order over £20 amazon automatically adds the paid postage option then I have to click the free option. Just seems like amazon is trying to get more money out of you and hoping you don’t notice the added cost

Yep, they are and it's a bit questionable to do so. It should automatically choose free delivery, but the system tries to make customers pay extra.

Yes, it’s a complete con, trying to catch people out. They also used to place the ‘join prime’ button at a prominent spot, again trying to catch people out. Mind you, if you do ever make a mistake, just get onto their chat for them to sort it out - after all, they’re well aware of their exploitative tactics
