America Might End up Statueless, or with Very Few.

Other

There's been a somewhat recent trend in US of statues being taken down and even destroyed (broken to pieces) because they're considered either racist, sexist, hateful or what have you.

Here's one of the more recent that went down:

Even if a statue represents one of those things, it's still part of the country's history and removing it won't do any good. It's a piece of its history and it is what it is, the history can't be rewritten so it should be left as it is.

This saddens me that this is happening.

It’s funny when things like this happen - when you compare it to the Far East, despite the conflicts and wars in the past, once a statue or memorial is placed, the public never dare to deface it, and the ruling government parties never remove them, perhaps out of respect as well as the subservience that is deep rooted in them. Of course if a revolution were to ever happen, that all changes...

Isis have been guilty of wrecking, destroying many historic monuments, deliberately, they have no respect for human life or anything else.

lynnibis Yes the conflicts in the Middle East is a totally different level of destruction. There’s no order or control. If the same things were to happen in the Far East, say China, a zero tolerance stance would be applied (and I believe they’ve been adopted against any form of ‘freedom of speech’ deemed harmful to society - punishable by prison sentence, or even death)

That being said, during the civil war in China, lots of historical artefacts related to imperialism got trashed by communist supporters, but thankfully many got smuggled out of the country by political rebels for preservation. But if you dare even drop rubbish (even by accident!) in Tianmen square nowadays, you will not be greeted well by the soldiers who patrol the area - they will probably lock you up for a day or 2

lynnibis lol if you ever do, the countryside may be more enjoyable. The attitude of the people in China’s tourist hotspots were bad, and the soldiers were just rude. I’ve not been to the Terracotta Army site but I heard it’s a terrible place to visit

My son went recently on business and lost weight, he said it was awful trying to find somewhere to eat!

lynnibis tbh there are a lot of great food spots, but they’re known by locals and not shared with tourists. All the tourist areas for food were awful - everything I had in Beijing was salt, salted and saltiest! It’s only when you find yourself a local to guide you in the areas where you find the real gems. It’ll be the same in most countries pre social media/rating sites (China is not well known for permitting these kind of sites)

I do agree with you Rockman. I have said on these forums before how much I study and love history and I get so angry with all those who have gone before who have destroyed, mutilated and stolen buildings, artefacts, statues etc. They all tell the history of the world and it is important to leave records of how things were, even if they don't conform to the ideals of today. It was Napolean's army that defaced the great sphinx in Egypt and those who came after the ancient Egyptians stole the gold apex and lower limestone? from the pyramids.

And that'd be taken down too.. eventually.

I saw today the flag of Communism while passing through a street and didn't really like it, but it's not my place to get rid of it. If I did that, I'd be no better than those people who are committing these offenses to historical monuments.
