Anyone Else an Outlander Fan?

Other

I caught the first series by accident, flicking through Amazon programmes. By the 2nd episode I was hooked and quickly downloaded the books to my kindle. I literally lived and breathed Outlander for months. Meanwhile, the third series was aired, I had read all the books (2 more being written before it all comes to an end) and life lost it's sparkle. Sad, I know, but I am a live alone older lady and I had totally immersed myself in the whole world of Outlander. My granddaughter watched and became just as obsessed, so too did my best friend. I was on fb at the time and joined their fan base etc. Have a little reading corner with a comfy chair, outlander cushion and tartan throw. Anyway, 4th series has just started and it is like welcoming back old friends. There are lots of series I have loved, Vikings, 24, Strike Back, Black Sails, but Outlander has gone beyond that. In my opinion I doubt another series will ever match up to it.

I haven't seen it, but my granny loves it! She has read the books too and was so excited when it came out. She uses our amazon prime so that she can watch it. She is currently on season 3 and is looking forward to starting season 4

Yes, a lot of Grans enjoy it, myself included. But it is enjoyed by all generations, my granddaughter started watching at age 22 and it was she who bought me the Outlander cushion lol. I have learned a lot from it also, my knowledge of the Jacobite rebellions was very limited but I love History.

lynnibis I keep saying that I need to watch it but have never actually gotten round to it! Will need to make more of an effort to watch it. I grew up in the Highlands, so I know all about the Jacobite rebellions and I also love history, so would more than likely love the show!

MrsCraig I have time to indulge in box sets but not everyone does. If you love history and lived in highlands, you will be interested in the thread I just posted about Mary Queen of Scots.

lynnibis I haven't had a lot of time for box sets recently, but maybe in the next few weeks. Oh I will have to take a look.

Well the latest episode was aired last night and I am meant to wait and watch with my bestie who visits every Sunday evening. But how could I wait a whole week? But as I am happy to watch every episode twice I went ahead anyway. Don't know what I will do when this series finally ends.

Hate the show, would rather much watch something else more worthwhile. Just my opinion though.

How do you know if you haven't watched it? I get the distinct impression you are male and appreciate it may not be your cup of tea, but anyone who can write 8 best-selling books in a series (2more to go) and for it to become a smash the world over is ok in my book.

I never divulged whether or not I watch the show. I'll state now I've watched a few episodes.

Regardless, I much prefer Game of Thrones.

Just my opinion though.

deepcore well I totally adore GOT and cannot wait for the last series early next year. I enjoy the historical aspect of Outlander and have learned a lot about the Jacobites and the American war of independence. Being a soppy female I have never watched another series that has managed to convey a deep and abiding love in such a way that I feel part of it as they are now approaching their 50s and silly as it may sound I almost feel a part of their story. Not many things can reach that deeply into my soul and I guess it touches me because I have never known love like that which has lasted a lifetime.

When my granddaughter first watched she wasn't that bothered but by the 4th episode she was as captivated as me and so were many of her female friends at Uni. I am pretty sure it does not hold the same allure for the male of the species though, despite the violence and gore of the time being graphically shown.

Your comments are interesting. I watched the first series with my husband and I thought we both enjoyed it......but when the second series came up and work commitments meant he was unable to watch the start he told me not to bother recording it. He felt that it was more romance than action and 'they rode about a bit over the hills then went back to Lallybroch'. I wonder how many watchers dropped off after the first series thinking it was a lightweight? That first series probably was a platform for the main characters to develop. I am forever telling him - 'you have missed such a good series'. At times it's been brutal but closer to history than most author-lead dramas allow. I am also a GOT nut so I was wondering if you felt the same as my husband - 'it was OK but more for women'. (he has since watched a couple of recent episodes and reckons it's 'woken up')

I have had new wardrobes fitted, strangely enough vouchers from a comp win. The fitter was surprised to see my Outlande r poster and said he had met Catriona Balfe when fitting her wardrobes lol.

Hi angemski thanks for that. Have watched series 1 and 2, so you mean 3 is now showing as I thought that was July? Keifer Sutherland is touring UK with his band at the moment but nowhere near me. Bit long in the tooth to be a groupie these days but would love to have seen them.

Lynibis I recorded the first series and will probably watch it soon. Watching Desig Survivor at the moment. I just know we will both enjoy this again. (trying to keep away from the chat at the mo - some heavy duty anger in the posts) So glad I didn't comment on it.

Have resurrected this thread because I have just started watching series 5 this evening. It is so long between them that I had gone off the boil a bit. However, I watched the last one of series 4 and 2 of series 5. The old magic is still there and I had to force myself to turn off after 3 straight. I will watch 2 tomorrow and 2 on Monday as that is when each new episode appears on Amazon. Then it will just be one a week until the series ends.......I shall be bereft again.

Must tag the girlies on this one as don't know if you all like it or just me and angemski.

Hi Lynibis I don't really watch much tv tbh. Watched the first episode of The Stranger the other day, is intriguing. Must be frustrating that they leave a long time between them. Glad to hear that the old magic is there and that you are enjoying the new series x

Dani1 I watched the stranger and thought it was quite good. I watched because Richard Armitage was in it and I enjoyed watching him in the first series of Strike Back.

Iv been watching season 5 & really enjoying it. I dont want to say much as not sure where you are up too now but the latest ep is a shocker. (You'll know when you see it what I'm referring too) Iv only read the first book so not sure how this series expected to end compared with book, but it's obvious its leading to a Bonnet confrontation.

I think I know what you mean because I remember it vividly in the book and I have just finished episode 4 and I can see where it is heading. I am warming to Brianna and Roger but at first felt she especially was very miscast. It must have been difficult to cast Roger as in his own time he was a scholar with no experience of war but they had to temper that with not making him too nerdy or Brianna would have outshine him.

All too soon another series will bite the dust!

Yes, I am still watching but I admit the books spoilt this a little for me. I watched the first two and decided to pause and binge watch them when I had time........now would probably be a good time to resume. 😆

Yes, I am often torn but I do love on-screen even if it often differs from my imagination when reading.

I still love both mediums though and although I didn't get there this year (after all the anticipation) I will re book for next year.
