Has Anyone Ever Used College/student Hairdressers

Yep i did once when I worked in the IT dept for a local college - went to the girls in the Hospitality section and asked them to cut, bleach and dye my hair grey for an extra part on the movie "Rob Roy" and she ended up making a mistake and my hair ended up green!

Just laughed and kept it anyway as I like to be different!

No never btw i hardly went once or twice to get my hair from someone/somewhere. I always do mine at home

I got mine done by a college in Coventry as recommended by a friend. I was bleach blonde at the time and naturally I am medium brown so fairly dark roots compared to the blonde. I personally didn’t like the way they did it and cried all night about the state of my hair

Dont see why not your can get washed, dried, styled and sometimes colour for free or next to nothing. You get your hair done and others are getting experience so its a win win situation.

My mum had a great experience with getting her hair done by a student at college. She had her hair cut into a Bob and coloured for very little and she looked amazing. Everyone complimented it.

I have had many cuts by them it's a shame ours closed and moved to newer location way out of my travel distance but worth it you can ask for grade 3 who have been training a lot longer most hair dresser ask for models too worth looking or someone just starting mobile hair dressing to build a profile

Im a qualified hairdresser/barber and my first 2 years of training i was in college and we had a college salon that was a fraction of the price of a normal salon. They only let 2nd years do the clients hair and they are monitored by the tutors that are professionals anyway, they will also check it at the end and correct any mistakes.

Many years ago, I went to one of the Vidal Sassoon salons to get my hair cut by a student. It cost £5 and took 3 hours! It wasn't the best cut, neither was it the worst. Worth a go if you’ve got the time

Yes when I was at college we used to cut each others hair and the public’s. they are supervised and very careful and probably do give the best hair cuts as they have just learnt and being watched.

I went to Vidal Sassoon as a student. I had a shoulder length bob and came out looking like Sinead O’Connor in ‘Nothing Compares to You’! I cried for weeks and bought loads of hats and berets from charity shops to wear. Never again!

I knew a student hairdresser and she asked if she could cut my hair for her portfolio (had a mohawk at the time). I got it done for free and it was done to the same standard as my local place and I would have happily gone again if it was closer.

I am a college lecturer in the hair and beauty dept and have been for 20+ years now. We let the trainees practice their skills on their 'head blocks' and each other/family members for the first year. Then in year 2 the learners continue to do the services offered in a hair salon. Year 3 do more complex services such as colour and cut transformations. I supervise them well and have got regular clients for up to 30 years, from when we opened. The price is non profit. I can give you an example of a stand alone Olaplex treatment and a blow dry being a special offer on a Weds of £14. It is marketed in the salons at £25 to £35 upwards. Same quality product but carried out very carefully. I find something that would take 20 mins with a qualified stylist will take a trainee an hour or so. So thats an extra 40mins. So that said, we presently use Neal and Wolf colour range and products. So a full set of say 2 colour highlights will be £18 to £25 depending on length. So that would usually take couple of hours in a salon....so you can see where we are going with this.

So cheapest way of getting your hair done - yes and it will be as professional as anywhere else.

You will pay a fraction of the cost but you will need to invest with your own time. But the biggest reward will be helping a stylist get their speed up and become commercially viable. Help them with confidence etc. That kind of giving something back is to me - priceless.

Also, if you love a bargain and you can get to a college or training centre. you can purchase professional products at discounted prices too. A salon professional duo (big salon size, with pumps) of say Neal and Wolf shampoo and conditioner has a market retail value of £39.95. Now, that would last a long time indeed and we can take over £15 off that price. Saving you even more on styling products. And, in addition to all of this you could get yourself a full body massage for £16. Shame you are all not in the North West and near me! Lol. Bargains a plenty. Ask Martin Lewis xx

I've had many haircuts from students who were supervised at college. Never had a bad cut and they done an excellent job. The only bad haircuts I've had were from Groupon, never used them again

It's a great time to volunteer at local hair and beauty colleges at the moment, It's exam season and they are usually desperate for clients to practice on during assessments. Many times it's only pennies for a whole afternoon of treatments

I at one point about 10 years ago was one of those students at the college doing hairdressing so of course I would recommend. But I can see why someone wouldn’t be sure about it. You can request to be in one of the higher level classes though so students with 1 or 2 years experience. Also the tutors keep such a close eye on you they will pick up if there’s any issue before it even happens. The only thing I’d say is expect it to take longer than at a usual hairdressers as students have to fill out forms and follow detailed protocols as part of the training process etc.
