Has Anyone Tried Kombucha?

Ask a Question

I am trying to eat and drink healthier and have read about the benefits, but to be honest when I looked up what it was "Kombucha is a fermented drink made from tea, sugar and a bacterial culture called a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast)" it was a little off putting.

As it is a little bit on the pricey side, can anyone let me know which flavour isn't too disgusting and it they have seen any of the supposed health benefits.

I was keen to try and sampled a few but doesn't sail my boat at all.I believe homemade kimchi is better.

MelissaLee1 I have seen some recipes on how to make it but don't want to buy all the ingredients and find I hate it, also I've heard some horror stories about if you don't make it right πŸ™‚

beccatavender Lady in my gardening class makes it with cabbage and salt..says' it's easy and luvvly but I think Ill stick to greek yoghurt. It's easier and probably more versatile as well as more palatable in my book.

MelissaLee1 I totally agree that doesn't sound very appetizing, I didn't realise that you could get the same bacteria from Greek yogurt, if that's the case I will give Kombucha a miss πŸ™‚

MelissaLee1 When I was in High School my Food and Nutrition told us that she always drank the juices from cabbage apparently she'd add Oxo or Bovril to it after she simmered it as it had really good healthy properties.

Growing up in the 70's my parents always gave me cabbage cooking water to drink.... I don't know if it did me any good, but it didn't harm me.... I often use the cabbage water to make gravy nowadays....xx

My advice try a single can or bottle before committing to a bulk order.

I tried Remedy Kombucha Raspberry Lemonade and honestly it was grim, it's like drinking vinegar to me. I like lashings of vinegar on fish and chips but not disgusted as pink lemonade.

I bought it in Holland and Barrett and went to see the reviews and many people says it was refreshing and nice while a few others mention the vinegar taste.

ILOVEFANTA That makes sense, I will try this flavour, as I don't like the flavour of tea so really looking for something to mask the taste 😁 I will checkout H&B. I think I should try it at least once. Thanks for the advice

ILOVEFANTA Thank you, I bought some today from Holland & Barrett, the taste wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but I wouldn't say I was a fan!

It was drinkable πŸ™‚

Supposedly feeds the β€œgood” bacteria in your gut together with fermented foods which are also beneficial. I have tried the pineapple and peach from Holland and Barretts which isn’t a bad size bottle for I think it was around Β£4. I only have a small glass in the morning so it lasts quite well.

If you can get hold of a scoby you just add it to cold sweetened green tea in something like a large kilner jar and let it ferment... just topping up as you use it and the level goes down. There is a new trend for making kombucha with coffee but I haven't tried that.

You can make sauerkraut by finely shredding a white cabbage, mixing it with salt & leaving it for a few hours to soften (giving an occasional stir) while the water runs out, then bottle, again in a kilner jar and leave for a couple of weeks to let it ferment...this is basically also the method for making kimchi but with added spices....Lots of tutorials on Youtube.

Haven't got a clue what this is.

I drink booze and smoke cigarettes. Will kill me off in the end, but at least I'll enjoy.

it's become a bit of a health fad so there are lots of companies trying to cash in on this. As a result tehre are many offerings of varying tastes/quality.

I've tried a number of them and like these ones the best

www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/the-gutsy-captain-kombucha-original-bio-organic-drink-6100127257 (this still has a bit of sugar in it which probably explains why it tastes so good - in most other kombucha's the sugar has all been fermented off)

I find it a refreshing change from the norm. Not convinced of the health claims but do like it.
