How about a handprint kit - I’ve bought this as a gift before, you can get ones that are mess free (don’t need to put the ink on the baby’s hand) or baby free ink

lornaae something like this although with the current postal times may not come in time for Christmas, you could find others though that offer fast delivery www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223750934388?media=COPY&mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=YmNs2CKnRBy&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=6zd2pQf9SRa&var&widget_ver=artemis

If the parents are not wealthy I think something that saves the parents money is ideal. A decorated cardboard box filled with baby products, babygros, a home knitted matinee jacket(?), a baby toy, bootees and mittens. Add a few bits in larger sizes as babies grow so quickly. I did this for youngest grandchild and his mum mentioned it the other day, he is now 14!

If you prefer a gift to treasure into old age get a mint set of coins (they come in a presentation pack) for the year of birth, you can also get year books of stamps.

It depends on your budget but I do a small hamper for the baby. I put in things that will be useful, like nappies, baby wipes, muslins, a few baby grows in the next size up, hooded towel, baby toiletries, a book to read, baby blanket, you could even do things for when baby is older, like weaning items, pram shoes, clothes. The baby will get loads of things for newborn. When our son was born people bought us things that we could use straight away and things that could be used as he got bigger. I was very grateful for the things for when he was bigger as it meant when he took a massive growth spurt we had clothes for him.

There's so many different things you could buy for new born babies, first off it would be helpful to know if the baby is a boy or girl and what your relationship is to the child.

These would be great for a little boys nursey..

Put the money in a savings account or buy shares or premium bonds for them. They won’t know what the gift is you bought and won’t understand any of it.

Why not have a look at my first years they have lots of lovely items designed for babies and young children. Hopefully you might find some inspiration.

I made a nappy cake for my friend. She loved it. So practical she said she loved it.

The best new baby / Christening present we have bought is a set of coins from the Royal Mint, however they do other baby gifts too. Here are two of them.

When my Granddaughter was born I bought a Video Baby Monitor and my son said that they really don’t know what they would have done without it because when the baby cries the first thing you do is go straight to see what the problem is and then 9 times out of ten they are only stirring or something and nothing, With the Monitor they could put the baby in the front room etc and if she cried they could check the video first to see if she was just stirring or something else, I used to check on my babies at the slightest sound and half the time they had gone back to sleep or would have if I hadn’t gone into the room, Especially when they are your first baby the slightest sound and you are checking on them, Daniella said she was going to purchase one for her brother when his first baby arrives she said it really was a godsend she could get on with housework etc without worrying if she would miss the baby crying or constantly have to go into the room to check on her, I ended up buying two other Family members a Video Monitor, Also another idea is the Teddy/ or other soft toy that plays the sound of the womb or heartbeat/ white noise I have purchased 9 of them for family and friends for new babies
