Is He the Best Person to Give Health Warnings
Other
Firstly please let me say I am not being rude about someone's looks, personality, character etc (I am no vivacious character or good looker myself) but I really do not think the Chief Medical Officer who keeps popping up on screen is the best person for the job.
His blank face and monotone voice makes me want to switch off, in more ways than one. It is like a public broadcast from the 50s.
If they want all the younger people to take notice they should have someone with a bit of personality, along with the gravitas needed, to get the message across.
It can be announced verbally and with a scrolling banner that it is a government warning, so anyone could be the face of these announcements.
The problem with that though is who would they have? For example, in Scotland, say they picked Lewis Capaldi or Kevin Bridges, they would appeal to most people but people like my parents would complain because they aren't medical experts.
I'm not too bothered who gives the message, I've seen it so many times now I probably don't pay as much attention when it is on but I'm still following all the advice.
I am thinking of aiming at young people. Whilst I know you're not old it is the 17 to 25 age group that need to be targeted. There are plenty of professional people like Dr. Hilary, Brian Cox, or even people who are unknown but qualified doctor/scientist and have a bit of character. My teen grandson wouldn't even look let alone listen to the guy who is currently doing it.
But I agree it shouldn't be a pop/film celebrity that is why I suggested personality and gravitas.
Lynibis I'm 30 this year, so slightly above that age group. I teach a number of 17/18 year olds and unfortunately some of them wouldn't listen to Dr Hilary or Brian Cox either, most of the teenagers I know have been really good at following the guidelines. I agree that a doctor or scientist with some personality would be a good representative, but I think as long as the message is getting across that is all that matters. Plus they might be worried that someone with more personality might make it sound like a less serious situation.
Lynibis "But I agree it shouldn't be a pop/film celebrity that is why I suggested personality and gravitas"
I wasn't going to - but if you think I could help I might be willing to come out of retirement Lyn
I've nothing better to do
Lynibis it is the 17-25?? NO its not,all the college kids were being praised by their tutors as they'd sensibly took onboard all the rules& regulations whilst they were still in college, and my sons are first ones to nag about the washing/ distancing routines!Same in uni for my other son& his friends. (21& almost 17) my older 2grandchildren are just as eager. I find its the 25-35 yr old layabouts who are the ones who are complacent.the same ones who hang about on street corners, and think its their right to get paid for sitting on benches smoking& boozing.
Caz2 there will be people in every age group that aren't listening to advice and doing what they should be. It wouldn't matter who was giving the advice, some people just won't listen. There will always be those who are vigilant and those who think it won't affect me, I'll do what I want.
I agree with you Lynbis something a bit strange/unsettling about the person they have doing it at the moment.
Not convinced we really need to be constantly reminded either thou, think we all know the drill by now . In the evening we settle down at home to watch TV and put all this Cornavirus stuff temporarily out of our heads , only to be reminded of it when the Adverts, come on.
Yayy who is right for the job in this government? None of them....but people did not vote for HOPE they voted for people will die....that is what they keep saying everyday....
Or maybe Boris johnson himself should have done it? The younger ones seem to like him, they find him 'amusing& cheerful' i think.
The point I was making was that the guy doing it sounds like a monotone robot so I reckon just about anyone would be an improvement.
Sorry I canβt agree. We do not a want a so called celebrity telling us the facts. This is factual and we should all take action.
My OH has commented on how dull & monotone he is... he does look as tho he even finds himself infinitely boring
I don't think they could have found anyone with less of a personality and a less inviting demeanor could they? You would have to go a long way for some competition for him....
Hopefully better than Scotland's chief medical officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood, who broke her own advice about staying at home. She got caught making two trips to her second home. She resigned a couple of hours ago
Even those with the 'power' aren't immune but still want to preach to us and then disregard their own advice. Two-faced and dangerous. Mind you their idea of isolation is very different to many as they usually live on large estates too!
