Beware of Judging the past ..........(quote from Endeavour)
Other
................by your modern enlightened views of today, lest you be judged in the future.
Just heard those words in the opening scenes of Endeavour. The scriptwriter certainly put it succinctly, considering how well it applies today. Tearing down statues, blackening the reputations of previously admired historical figures etc.
For those who don't watch, Endeavour is the young Morse and the series is set in the 60s.
Not seen the program but I certainly hate living today’s world if only I could freeze time to early nineties maybe 80s. I so fear for my children and last week I was at breaking point
I really sympathise Ann as I feel like that constantly. It destroys my pleasure in life when I am worrying about the taliban and terrorism, the environment, youth stabbings, domestic violence, the list goes on. My best friend and I were talking and said we are very glad we are living the latter part of our lives as we would hate to be starting out now.
However, I think the message above was that we should not judge historical figures, by the times in which we live, who lived their lives as their time dictated. We may well be judged in the future for our crimes against the planet and humanity.
I love Endeavour and I love Oxford at the back set. I love the brave souls that risked life and limb to bring into being better values. As a catholic I yet admire the conviction of the Oxford movement and am not in the least offended to look upon the martyrs memorial either
I am desperate to visit Oxford and hope to do so next year on a road trip with my sister. It has such a history and I want to wander around amongst the dreaming spires.
I have never been a huge follower of Morse and Endeavour and have only recently got into them more. I love how those two shows, along with Lewis, have a connection and show policing through the decades.
Lynibis It's amazing, I used to live in Oxford and wandered around the city all the time but never visited any of the colleges - now I wish I had.
Lynibis Me too Lynibis.I went on a school trip to Cambridge when I was a teenager but was more concerned with finding a chip shop or a handsome fella. I did take some lovely pics though. Oxford is still on my list of places to go. There's a thing called the Oxford Tube .I honestly thought I could go on the underground .I shall not be reading Geography for a degree lol.
This is another quote I found to be sad but true.
'If your IQ is over a certain number, and it is surprisingly low, you will always find the world to be unbearable'.
This is said by Joe Goldberg in the Netflix series YOU
I will have to remember that quote shame I didn't know it last week for discussion with my daughter and my dad about tearing down statues
Some of the people honoured by a statue in their memory did not realise they would be vilified in the future. After all they did not have a crystal ball and neither do we so goodness knows what future generations will think of us.
Lynibis probably we will be vilified for our use of fossil fuels plus somethings we see as fine
Imnotcheap yes basically making the planet very sick, possibly terminal. Maybe we won't need to worry as there will be no one around to vilify us!
