Boots Wants to Recruit Hundreds of Unpaid Volunteers to Take Coronavirus Swabs

This is absolutely shocking!

Since the coronavirus pandemic began; I've been appalled by how badly some of the big companies have acted during this crisis and I won't forget when it's over.

Boots is US owned so we basically volunteer to create large profits for them which are then exported back to the US damaging our economy. I'd be happy if Boots were providing this service at cost for the NHS just because they hope it means they can open their shops back sooner but if they are profiteering on volunteers that seems completely unacceptable.

The UK is probably going to have the largest fall in living standards in the next 5 years on record. People just don't seem to be economically literate at all and so it wouldn't surprise me if they get those volunteers. Maybe Amazon will want volunteer drivers for delivering food parcels to its customers too.

I didn't know they were American these days. Boots was first started in Nottingham.

I guess with the high street retailer apocalypse maybe its good it was sold a few years ago as its probably in a downward spiral along with many other retailers in the high street apocalypse.

I quite agree. I am all for volunteering and often take part in charity and non-profit events. I drew the line when I was asked to volunteer for the Chelsea Flower Show which is a paid for event!

There are going to be a lot of people looking for work who need to earn money. I think this is appalling.

Boots are an absolute disgrace and as soon as they go under, the better.

I don't understand why Boots still exist. Pretty much everything in there costs more than everywhere else.

Dennab The last time that I was in there, there was just me and the wife. Absolutely no other customers at all.

TheChimp They make a lot of money from perfume sales at Christmas but yes, do seem relatively quiet at other times compared to similar sized shops like Wilko.

Don't you just get fed up with large companies always wanting volunteers. I would be very surprised if these volunteers aren't bullied into doing much more than they want to do and possibly without the PPE necessary to be safe. Let's face it, if the NHS doesn't have enough PPE why would Boots have it - unless they have been stockpiling it! These companies need to realise that there is always a cost and they have to bear that cost. We are not America where they are brought up to believe that you HAVE TO volunteer AND work night and day at the same time. Giving back is good but you cannot force people to otherwise it causes resentment. 🐞
