Favourite Breadcrumbs?

Ask a Question

Which ones are your favorite ones? I use them quite a lot as my toddler only eats things coated with bread. I know you can make them yourself but which ones do you rec for baking and frying? Atm using golden one and I am looking for other alternatives

I use panko breadcrumbs as they give a much crunchier finish to coated foods and they don't hold so much fat. If I have time I make them myself, just cut the crusts of white slices and don't whizz them so much. You do pay a high price on the shelves so worth prepping them yourself.

We use the lidl own natural breadcrumbs, but my husband does make his own from the heels of the bread.

we make our own too using the crusts and bits left and I freeze them for use as toppings or to add to home made fishcakes etc.

BORDERJOE it saves them from going to waste. We use ours in homemade burgers too as it helps to bind them, never thought of using them for fishcakes though

BORDERJOE can I ask why you freeze them? Just curiosity. They can stay in a container.

GSM they keep for longer when frozen. In a container they keep for a month in the fridge, in the freezer they kept for longer. It also means if you aren't using them that often they don't go off and you haven't wasted the breadcrumbs or the effort used to make them.

GSM because I don't bake them first .... we make our bread in a machine and the ends invariably have a hole in them ... I whizz them up and then freeze as they are and then use them however when I need them. I'm a bit slapdash...always wanting to get into garden, or do hobbies, or whatever!

MrsCraig We tried Lidl smoked salmon (bear with me ...) ... and only needed half a pack so I cut it up, added finely sliced spring onion and some mash from spuds and sweet potato that I had frozen ... beaten egg, and as it looked a bit wet, added the crumbs. Tasted great. The next time I did a 'Jamie Oliver' and added crushed water biscuits that were going a bit soft ... they worked well too. I bet not many of you are clamouring to eat at ours lol!

MrsCraig too true ..... don't start me off ..... I guess it's a combo of being broke for decades and working so hard for little like so many folk ..... now we have more cash ....not loads!!! ... but the habits are ingrained and I also now believe it so bad to waste anything also for environmental reasons and because we are so lucky to have what we do. 🙃

BORDERJOE thats definitely me! I am a penny pincher so anything to help save money! Especially just now trying to save for moving house and with only one wage coming in I do everything I can to avoid spending and wasting money! I also do it for environmental reasons.

We used some of our breadcrumbs last night to make homemade stuffing, it was delicious! I say we, I really mean my husband!

The only bread crumbs I buy are panko, I normally make ours the best breadcrumbs to make are from stale baguettes specially the salt and pepper ones from tescos. We normally get them when reduced and i wizz it up in the food processor and then freeze.

I’ve always got some in the freezer and I use them making home made stuffing for the Sunday roast
