Cat Milk

Other

I have 5 indoor cats (yes I’m crazy cat lady, yes I talk to them etc etc) and as a regular treat I do buy them cat milk as apparently ordinary cows milk is bad for them. Tesco’s own cat milk is 75p for 200ml - ouch.

Checking on google - I posed the simple query ‘can I give my cats lactose free milk?’ The resounding answer was no.

I actually bothered to read the details on the carton this week but for some reason when I try to take a photo it just says something went wrong’ and won’t let me add the photo.

The exact words on one side are:-

A COMPLEMENTARY PET FOOD FOR CATS AGED 1+ YEARS. MADE WITH EASILY DIGESTIBLE LACTOSE REDUCED COWS’ MILK

Can someone please confirm I can give my cats lactose free milk or not ?

Oh and can someone tell me why I can’t add photos to my post lol

Thank you x

MelissaLee1963 my cats always have several bowls of water around the house. If cats don’t tolerate cow’s milk well - why are Tesco (I haven’t checked any other brands yet) allowed to sell milk specifically for cats made of cats milk ? I’m confused and somewhat troubled now x

suevernon1968 The Tesco milk is goat's milk not cow's milk or lactose reduced perhaps.Cats shouldn't eat cheese either but mine gets the odd bit.

MelissaLee1963 I’ve got the carton in front of me (using my iPhone it still won’t let me take a photo to add or add one from my photos file) and it clearly states cows milk x

MelissaLee1963 I only have an iPad and iPhone. But with the cat milk query and not being to add photos (I can’t take a photo to add either) I’m wondering if the last of my marbles have finally rolled away lol x

telmel my cats go crazy when I walk in with shopping bags - climbing in and out of different bags - it’s not worth trying to put the shopping away until I have given them some expensive 75p for 200ml cat milk lol

Just use lactose free milk, cats suffer the same issues that some people do with milk so just use lactose free. I think the cheapest currently might be Aldi at about £1.05 but it wasn't long ago they were doing it for 83p a litre so wouldn't surprise me if it has already gone up in price again. It was about 10 days ago I bought it. Double cream has a lot less lactose as its more fat but less sugars so is better for cats than milk as another option on occasion.

Cats don't need or want sugar and LACTOSE is the sugar in milk. They can't even taste "sweetness". I see little point in looking for alternatives if the cat is quite happy with water. Milk without lactose isn't a treat - it's just a waste of money.

Incidentally many, including some health care professionals don't realise, that whole milk contains LESS sugar (lactose) than skimmed milk. I realised when told by a practice nurse that WHOLE milk contains too much sugar that she didn't know what she was talking about.😀

Lactose milk is still a dairy product so it would be best not to give it to your cats you could buy a powder cat milk on line or from a pet shop as that would probably work out cheaper

I don’t think it’s good for them, although I’ve known people to give their cats cream and they’ve managed to live long lives

hspexy It's true, but although normal milk or cream isn't actually toxic to cats it can cause stomach upsets, diarrhoea being just one of them... at least the cat won't die of constipation.😀 Although many an owner of a cat with diarrhoea wishes it would.😀

You have to save a photo on your iPhone or iPad, go to the top right on your post and click on the three dots to edit this post. At the bottom right of your message touch the camera icon, it will then give you the option to attach a photo from your library, then save changes. I have both gadgets so it should be the same

Ask your vet, they should know whether you can or not. If you can't give them lactose free then try goats milk.

MrsCraig I’ve asked four different vet practises and as on here their opinions are divided. It started off more as I got fed up of them drinking my cup of tea if I left the room. I always drink decaffeinated so I wasn’t worried about my cats being any more barmy than they already are - it was just the milk part I was worried about. I went into a vets to ask them and they said only specialised cat milk - not just lactose free milk - when I looked at their cat milk the ingredients confirmed it was reduced lactose cows milk.

I’m more confused than ever now lol x

"Every Day's A School Day" I had no idea that you got specific milk for cats, it's a good job I've never had a cat as I would've given it the same cows milk that I use.

pato I’ve always had cats - the family cat when I was a child who had to sleep on my bed and I used to try to get him to stay in my dolls pram etc - but none of this don’t let them have this or that is bad for them etc. as you can see from the divided opinion on here ! Maybe this cat milk business was thought of by one of the large cat food manufacturers- will we ever know !

I've always given my cat now and previous ones a drop of cream when I get it, which isn't very often, as a treat and they've always loved it. I suppose it would be very different if you gave it to them on a regular basis though.

Although an uncle of mine used to feed his cat cheese often, said he preferred it to cat food.

Xenophon I remember the days when our milk used to get delivered in glass bottles and there was always that little creamy bit on the top - I was never keen so I used to sneak that to our cat when I was young lol.

I give kitty special milk designed for young kitties .. she always seems fine with it but I have heard milk is not good for them. I guess if the lactose level is extremely low then it should be fine .. even the magpies and crows love it
